Then Moses said to the sons of Israel: Jehovah has called by name Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur of the tribe of Judah. He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship. He is a master artist familiar with gold, silver, and copper. read more.
He knows how to cut and set stones and how to work with wood. He is an expert in all trades. Jehovah also gave Bezalel and Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, from the tribe of Dan the ability to teach others. Jehovah made these men highly skilled in all trades. They can do the work of jewelers, carpenters, and designers. They know how to embroider violet, purple and bright red yarn on fine linen. They know how to weave yarn on a loom. They can do all kinds of trades. They are master artists.

I created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. I also created the destroyer who will work havoc.

I filled him with the Spirit of God (my power). I gave him understanding, skill, and ability for every kind of artistic work. This is for planning skillful designs and working them in gold, silver, and copper. It is also for cutting jewels to be set and for carving wood and for every other kind of artistic work.


Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon carried away captive Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the officials of Judah. He also captured the craftsmen and smiths from Jerusalem and brought them to Babylon. Then Jehovah showed me two baskets of figs set before the Temple of Jehovah!

Nebuchadnezzar carried away as prisoners the people of Jerusalem, all the royal princes, and all the leading men, ten thousand in all. He also deported all the skilled workers, including the blacksmiths, leaving only the poorest of the people behind in Judah.


The craftsman encourages the goldsmith. He who smooths with the hammer spurs on him who strikes the anvil. He says of the welding: It is good. He nails down the idol so it will not topple.

The blacksmith takes a tool and works with it in the coals. He shapes an idol with hammers; he forges it with the might of his arm. He gets hungry and loses his strength. He drinks no water and grows faint.

I also appointed Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, from the tribe of Dan, to help him. I have given every craftsman the skill necessary to make what I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark containing the words of my covenant with the throne of mercy on it, and all the other furnishings for the tent, the table and the dishes, the pure gold lamp stand and all its utensils, the altar for incense, the altar for burnt offerings and all its accessories, the basin with its stand, the special clothes the holy clothes for the priest Aaron and the clothes for his sons when they serve as priests, the anointing oil, and the sweet incense for the holy place. They will make all these things as I commanded you.


No blacksmith could be found in all of Israel. In this way the Philistines kept the Hebrews from making swords and spears.


Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of copper and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
