17 Fools suffered afflictionbecause of their rebellious ways and their sins.()

17 Because of their rebellious ways, fools suffered for their iniquities.

18 All manner of food, their soul abhorreth, and so they draw near unto the gates of death,

24 They saw the Lord’s works,His wonderful works in the deep.()

24 witnessed the works of the LORD his awesome deeds in the ocean's depth.

25 They mount the heavens, they descend the roaring deeps, their soul, by trouble, dissolveth;

25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

25 He spoke and raised a tempestthat stirred up the waves of the sea.()()

25 He spoke and stirred up a windstorm that made its waves surge.

26 They reel and stagger, like a drunken man, and, all their wisdom, is engulfed,

26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;Their soul ()melted away in their misery.

26 Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths,their courage() melting away in anguish,()

26 The people ascended skyward and descended to the depths, their courage melting away in their peril.

27 Then make they outcry to Yahweh in their peril, and, out of their distresses, he bringeth them forth,

27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.

27 They reeled and ()staggered like a drunken man,And ()were at their wits’ end.

27 they reeled and staggered like drunken men,and all their skill was useless.()

27 They reeled and staggered like a drunkard, as all their wisdom became useless.

28 He calmeth the storm to a whisper, and silent are their rolling waves:

28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,And He brought them out of their distresses.

28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,and He brought them out of their distress.()

28 Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, the LORD brought them out of their distress.

29 Then are they glad, because they are hushed, And he guideth them unto their desired haven.

29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

29 He ()caused the storm to be still,So that the waves ()of the sea were hushed.

29 He stilled the storm to a murmur,and the waves of the sea() were hushed.()

29 He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down.

30 Yea let them extol him in the convocation of the people, and, in the seated company of elders, let them praise him.

30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,So He guided them to their desired haven.

30 They rejoiced when the waves() grew quiet.Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for.()

30 So they rejoiced that the waves became quiet, and he led them to their desired haven.

31 He turneth Rivers into a desert, and, Springs of Water, into thirsty ground,

31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

31 ()Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,And for His ()()wonders to the sons of men!

31 Let them give thanks to the Lordfor His faithful loveand His wonderful works for all humanity.()

31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and for his awesome deeds on behalf of mankind.

32 A Land of Fruit, into a waste of salt, For the wickedness of them who dwell therein.

32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

32 Let them ()extol Him also ()in the congregation of the people,And ()praise Him at the seat of the elders.

32 Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the peopleand praise Him in the council of the elders.()

32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders.

33 He turneth A Desert, into a pool of water, and, A Parched Land into springs of water;

33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;

33 He ()()changes rivers into a ()wildernessAnd springs of water into a thirsty ground;

33 He turns rivers into desert,springs of water into thirsty ground,()

33 He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into dry ground,

34 And hath caused the famished to dwell there, And they have built them a city to dwell in;

34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

34 A ()fruitful land into a ()salt waste,Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

34 and fruitful land into salty wasteland,because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.()

34 and a fruitful land into a salty waste, due to the wickedness of its inhabitants.

35 And have sown fields, and planted vineyards, and made them fruits of increase:

35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.

35 He ()()changes a ()wilderness into a pool of waterAnd a dry land into springs of water;

35 He turns a desert into a pool of water,dry land into springs of water.()

35 He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water.

36 Thus hath he blessed them, and they have multiplied greatly, And, their cattle, he maketh not few.

36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;

36 And there He makes the hungry to dwell,So that they may establish ()()an inhabited city,

36 He causes the hungry to settle there,and they establish a city where they can live.()

36 There he settled the hungry, where they built a city to live in.

37 So have they become few and been brought low, By oppression, misfortune, and sorrow;

37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.

37 And sow fields and ()plant vineyards,And ()gather a fruitful harvest.

37 They sow fields and plant vineyardsthat yield a fruitful harvest.()

37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a productive harvest.

38 He poureth contempt upon nobles, and causeth them to wander in a pathless waste;

38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

38 Also He blesses them and they ()multiply greatly,And He ()does not let their cattle decrease.

38 He blesses them, and they multiply greatly;()He does not let their livestock decrease.()

38 Then he blessed them, and they became numerous; he multiplied their cattle.

39 But he hath set the needy on high from affliction, and made families, like a flock: -

39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.

39 When they are ()diminished and ()bowed downThrough oppression, misery and sorrow,

39 When they are diminished and are humbledby cruel oppression and sorrow,()

39 But they became few in number, and humiliated by continued oppression, agony, and sorrow.

40 The upright seeth and is glad, And, all perverseness, hath closed her mouth.

40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.

40 He ()pours contempt upon ()princesAnd ()makes them wander ()in a pathless waste.

40 He pours contempt on nobles()and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.()

40 Having poured contempt on their nobles, causing them to err aimlessly in the way.

41 Who is wise? then let him observe these things! and diligently consider the lovingkindness of Yahweh.

41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.

41 But He ()sets the needy ()securely on high away from affliction,And ()makes his families like a flock.

41 But He lifts the needy out of their suffering()and makes their families multiply like flocks.()

41 Yet he lifted the needy from affliction and made them families like a flock.
