4 I will incline my ear to (F)a proverb;(G)I will (a)express my (H)riddle on the harp.

4 I turn my ear to a proverb;I explain my riddle with a lyre.(D)

4 I will focus my attention on a proverb; I will use the harp to expound my riddle.

5 Wherefore shall I fear in the days of evil, the iniquity of my heel shall surround me.

5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

5 Why should I (I)fear in days of adversity,When the iniquity of my (b)foes surrounds me,

5 Why should I fear in times of trouble? The iniquity of my foes surrounds me.(E)

5 Why should I be afraid when evil days come my way, when the wickedness of those who deceive me surrounds me

6 They trusting upon their wealth, and they will glory in the multitude of their riches.

7 A man redeeming shall not redeem the brother, he shall not give to God his ransom:

7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

7 No man can by any means (K)redeem his brotherOr give to God a (L)ransom for him—

7 Yet these cannot redeem a person(b)or pay his ransom to God(G)

7 No man can redeem the life of another, nor can he give to God a sufficient payment for him

8 (And the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceased forever:)

8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

8 For (M)the redemption of (c)his soul is costly,And he should cease trying forever—

8 since the price of redeeming him is too costly, one should forever stop trying(c)(H)

8 for it would cost too much to redeem his life, and the payments would go on forever

9 And he shall yet live forever, he shall not see destruction.

9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

9 That he should (N)live on eternally,That he should not (d)(O)undergo decay.

9 so that he may live foreverand not see the Pit.(I)

10 For he shall see the wise shall die: together the fool and the stupid one shall perish, and they left their wealth to others.

10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

10 For he sees that even (P)wise men die;The (Q)stupid and the senseless alike perishAnd (R)leave their wealth to others.

11 The midst of them their houses forever, their dwellings to generation and generation; they called in their names upon their lands.

11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

11 Their (e)(S)inner thought is that their houses (T)are foreverAnd their dwelling places to all generations; They have (U)called their lands after their own names.

11 Their graves are their eternal homes,(d)their homes from generation to generation, though they have named estates after themselves.(L)

11 Their inner thoughts are on their homes forever; their dwellings from generation to generation. They even name their lands after themselves.

12 And man shall not abide in honor, being like as the beasts they perished.

12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

12 But (V)man in his (f)pomp will not endure; He is like the (g)beasts that (h)perish.

12 But despite his assets,(e) man will not last;he is like the animals that perish.(M)

12 But humanity cannot last, despite its conceit; it will pass away just like the animals.

13 This their way folly to them: and those after them will delight in their mouth. Silence.

13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

14 Like sheep they are headed for Sheol;Death will shepherd them. The upright will rule over them in the morning,(O)and their form will waste away in Sheol,(g)far from their lofty abode.(P)

14 Like sheep, they are destined for the realm of the dead, with death as their shepherd. The upright will have dominion over them in the morning; their strength will be consumed in the afterlife, so that they have no home.

15 But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hades, for he will receive me. Silence.

15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

15 But God will (AB)redeem my soul from the (m)power of (n)Sheol,For (AC)He will receive me. Selah.

15 But God will redeem my lifefrom the power of Sheol, for He will take me.(Q)Selah

17 For when he dies he will (AE)carry nothing away; His (p)glory will not descend after him.

17 For when he dies, he will take nothing at all;his wealth(i) will not follow him down.(S)

17 When he dies, he will not be able to take it all with him his possessions will not follow him to the grave,

18 For in his living he will praise his soul, (and he will praise thee for thou wilt do good to thyself,)

18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
