A Call To Obedience

1 For the choir director; (a)on the Gittith. A Psalm of Asaph.(A)Sing for joy to God our (B)strength;Shout (C)joyfully to the (D)God of Jacob.

1 {To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph.} Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.

1 Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Raise a shout to the God of Jacob.

1 Sing aloud to God our strength;Shout for joy to the God of Jacob (Israel).

2 Raise a song, strike (E)the timbrel,The sweet sounding (F)lyre with the (G)harp.

2 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.

2 Lift up a song—play the tambourine,the melodious lyre, and the harp.(C)

2 Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant-sounding lyre along with the harp.

2 Raise a song, sound the timbrel,The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.

3 Blow the trumpet at the (H)new moon,At the full moon, on our (I)feast day.

3 Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

3 Blow the horn on the day of our feasts(a)(b)during the new moon(D)and during the full moon.

3 Blow the ram's horn when there is a New Moon, when there is a full moon, on our festival day,

3 Blow the trumpet at the New Moon,At the (a)full moon, on our feast day.

4 For it is a statute for Israel,An ordinance of the God of Jacob.

4 For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.

4 For this is a statute for Israel,a judgment of the God of Jacob.(E)

4 because it is a statute in Israel, an ordinance by the God of Jacob,

4 For this is a statute for Israel,An ordinance of the God of Jacob.

5 He established it for a testimony in JosephWhen he (b)(J)went throughout the land of Egypt.I heard a (K)language that I did not know:

5 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.

5 He set it up as an ordinance for Josephwhen He went throughout(c) the land of Egypt.(F)I heard an unfamiliar language:

5 a decree that he prescribed for Joseph when he went throughout the land of Egypt, speaking a language I did not recognize.

5 He established it for a testimony in (b)JosephWhen He went throughout the land of Egypt.I heard the language [of One whom] I did not know, saying,

6 “I (c)(L)relieved his shoulder of the burden,His hands were freed from the (d)basket.

6 I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.

6 “I relieved his shoulder from the burden;his hands were freed from carrying the basket.(G)

6 I removed the burden from your shoulder; your hands were freed of the burdensome basket.

6 “I removed the burden from his shoulder;His hands were freed from the basket.

7 “You (M)called in trouble and I rescued you;I (N)answered you in the hiding place of thunder;I proved you at the (O)waters of Meribah. (e)Selah.

7 Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.

7 You called out in distress, and I rescued you;I answered you from the thundercloud.(H)I tested you at the waters of Meribah.(I)Selah

7 In a time of need you called out and I delivered you; I answered you from the dark thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Interlude

7 “You called in [the time of] trouble and I rescued you;I answered you in the secret place of thunder;I tested you at the waters of Meribah.(A) Selah.

8 (P)Hear, O My people, and I will (f)admonish you;O Israel, if you (Q)would listen to Me!

8 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;

8 Listen, My people, and I will admonish you.Israel, if you would only listen to Me!(J)

8 Listen, My people and I will warn you. Israel, if only you would obey me!

8 “Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you—O Israel, if you would listen to Me!

9 “Let there be no (R)strange god among you;Nor shall you worship any foreign god.

9 There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

9 There must not be a strange god among you;you must not bow down to a foreign god.(K)

9 You must neither have a foreign god over you or worship a strange god.

9 “Let there be no strange god among you,Nor shall you worship any foreign god.

10 (S)I, the Lord, am your God,Who brought you up from the land of Egypt;(T)Open your mouth wide and I will (U)fill it.

10 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

10 I am Yahweh your God,who brought you up from the land of Egypt.(L)Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.(M)

10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, open your mouth that I may fill it.

10 “I am the Lord your God,Who brought you up from the land of Egypt.Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

11 “But My people (V)did not listen to My voice,And Israel did not (g)obey Me.

11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

11 “But My people did not listen to Me;Israel did not obey Me.(N)

11 Yet my people didn't obey my voice; Israel didn't submit to me.

11 “But My people would not listen to My voice,And Israel did not [consent to] obey Me.

12 “So I (W)gave (h)them over to the stubbornness of their heart,To walk in their own devices.

12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

12 So I gave them over to their stubborn heartsto follow their own plans.(O)

12 So I allowed them to continue in their stubbornness, living by their own advice.

12 “So I gave them up to the stubbornness of their heart,To walk in [the path of] their own counsel.(B)

13 “Oh that My people (X)would listen to Me,That Israel would (Y)walk in My ways!

13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

13 If only My people would listen to Meand Israel would follow My ways,(P)

13 If only my people would obey me, if only Israel would walk in my ways!

13 “Oh, that My people would listen to Me,That Israel would walk in My ways!

14 “I would quickly (Z)subdue their enemiesAnd (AA)turn My hand against their adversaries.

14 I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.

14 I would quickly subdue their enemiesand turn My hand against their foes.”(Q)

14 Then I would quickly subdue their enemies. I would turn against their foes.

14 “Then I would quickly subdue and humble their enemiesAnd turn My hand against their adversaries;

15 (AB)Those who hate the Lord would (AC)pretend obedience to Him,And their time of punishment would be forever.

15 The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.

15 Those who hate the Lordwould pretend submission to Him;(R)their doom would last forever.(S)

15 Those who hate the LORD will cringe before him; their punishment will be permanent.

15 Those who hate the Lord would pretend obedience to Him and cringe before Him,And their time of punishment would be forever.

16 (i)But I would feed you with the (j)(AD)finest of the wheat,And with (AE)honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

16 He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.

16 But He would feed Israel(d) with the best wheat.“I would satisfy you with honey from the rock.”(T)

16 But I will feed Israel with the finest wheat, satisfying you with honey from the rock. A Psalm of Asaph

16 “But I would feed Israel with the finest of the wheat;And with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
