Israel's Unfaithfulness Punished

אִמְר֥וּ

’im·rū

､ לַאֲחֵיכֶ֖ם

la·’ă·ḥê·ḵem

to your brothers ､

– עַמִּ֑י

‘am·mî;

My people –

､ וְלַאֲחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם

wə·la·’ă·ḥō·w·ṯê·ḵem

and to your sisters ､

. רֻחָֽמָה׃

ru·ḥā·māh.

Mercy [is shown] .

רִ֤יבוּ

rî·ḇū

､ בְאִמְּכֶם֙

ḇə·’im·mə·ḵem

against your mother ､

､ רִ֔יבוּ

rî·ḇū,

bring charges ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

הִיא֙

hî

she [is]

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ אִשְׁתִּ֔י

’iš·tî,

My wife ､

וְאָנֹכִ֖י

wə·’ā·nō·ḵî

and [am] I

לֹ֣א

lō

– אִישָׁ֑הּ

’î·šāh;

her Husband –

וְתָסֵ֤ר

wə·ṯā·sêr

and let her put away

זְנוּנֶ֙יהָ֙

zə·nū·ne·hā

､ מִפָּנֶ֔יה‪‬

mip·pā·neh,

from her sight ､

וְנַאֲפוּפֶ֖יהָ

wə·na·’ă·p̄ū·p̄e·hā

and her adulteries

מִבֵּ֥ין

mib·bên

– שָׁדֶֽיהָ׃

šā·ḏe·hā.

her breasts –

פֶּן־

pen-

אַפְשִׁיטֶ֣נָּה

’ap̄·šî·ṭen·nāh

､ עֲרֻמָּ֔ה

‘ă·rum·māh,

וְהִ֨צַּגְתִּ֔יהָ

wə·hiṣ·ṣaḡ·tî·hā,

כְּי֖וֹם

kə·yō·wm

as in the day

､ הִוָּֽלְדָ֑הּ

hiw·wā·lə·ḏāh;

she was born ､

וְשַׂמְתִּ֣יהָ

wə·śam·tî·hā

､ כַמִּדְבָּ֗ר

ḵam·miḏ·bār,

like a wilderness ､

וְשַׁתִּ֙הָ֙

wə·šat·ti·hā

､ כְּאֶ֣רֶץ

kə·’e·reṣ

like a land ､

צִיָּ֔ה

ṣî·yāh,

וַהֲמִתִּ֖יהָ

wa·hă·mit·tî·hā

. בַּצָּמָֽא׃

baṣ·ṣā·mā.

with thirst .

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

And

– בָּנֶ֖יהָ

bā·ne·hā

on her children –

לֹ֣א

lō

not

אֲרַחֵ֑ם

’ă·ra·ḥêm;

I will have mercy

כִּֽי־

kî-

בְנֵ֥י

ḇə·nê

the sons

זְנוּנִ֖ים

zə·nū·nîm

. הֵֽמָּה׃

hêm·māh.

כִּ֤י

kî

– זָֽנְתָה֙

zā·nə·ṯāh

has played the harlot –

אִמָּ֔ם

’im·mām,

הֹבִ֖ישָׁה

hō·ḇî·šāh

has behaved shamefully

הֽוֹרָתָ֑ם

hō·w·rā·ṯām;

she who conceived them

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אָמְרָ֗ה

’ā·mə·rāh,

אֵלְכָ֞ה

’ê·lə·ḵāh

I will go

אַחֲרֵ֤י

’a·ḥă·rê

､ מְאַהֲבַי֙

mə·’a·hă·ḇay

my lovers ､

נֹתְנֵ֤י

nō·ṯə·nê

לַחְמִי֙

laḥ·mî

､ וּמֵימַ֔י

ū·mê·may,

and my water ､

צַמְרִ֣י

ṣam·rî

､ וּפִשְׁתִּ֔י

ū·p̄iš·tî,

and my linen ､

שַׁמְנִ֖י

šam·nî

My oil

. וְשִׁקּוּיָֽי׃

wə·šiq·qū·yāy.

and my drink .

､ לָכֵ֛ן

lā·ḵên

הִנְנִי־

hin·nî-

שָׂ֥ךְ

śāḵ

I will hedge up

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

דַּרְכֵּ֖ךְ

dar·kêḵ

､ בַּסִּירִ֑ים

bas·sî·rîm;

with thorns ､

וְגָֽדַרְתִּי֙

wə·ḡā·ḏar·tî

and wall in

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

גְּדֵרָ֔הּ

gə·ḏê·rāh,

וּנְתִיבוֹתֶ֖יהָ

ū·nə·ṯî·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā

so that her paths

לֹ֥א

lō

. תִמְצָֽא׃

ṯim·ṣā.

וְרִדְּפָ֤ה

wə·rid·də·p̄āh

And she will chase

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ מְאַהֲבֶ֙יהָ֙

mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

but not

תַשִּׂ֣יג

ṯaś·śîḡ

אֹתָ֔ם

’ō·ṯām,

וּבִקְשָׁ֖תַם

ū·ḇiq·šā·ṯam

and Yes she will seek them

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

but not

תִמְצָ֑א

ṯim·ṣā;

､ וְאָמְרָ֗ה

wə·’ā·mə·rāh,

and she will say ､

אֵלְכָ֤ה

’ê·lə·ḵāh

I will go

וְאָשׁ֙וּבָה֙

wə·’ā·šū·ḇāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

– אִישִׁ֣י

’î·šî

my husband –

הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן

hā·ri·šō·wn,

כִּ֣י

kî

ט֥וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

[it was] better

לִ֛י

lî

for me

אָ֖ז

’āz

. מֵעָֽתָּה׃

mê·‘āt·tāh.

וְהִיא֙

wə·hî

לֹ֣א

lō

not

יָֽדְעָ֔ה

yā·ḏə·‘āh,

כִּ֤י

kî

אָֽנֹכִי֙

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

נָתַ֣תִּי

nā·ṯat·tî

לָ֔הּ

lāh,

､ הַדָּגָ֖ן

had·dā·ḡān

､ וְהַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ

wə·hat·tî·rō·wōš

and new wine ､

､ וְהַיִּצְהָ֑ר

wə·hay·yiṣ·hār;

and oil ､

וְכֶ֨סֶף

wə·ḵe·sep̄

הִרְבֵּ֥יתִי

hir·bê·ṯî

לָ֛הּ

lāh

､ וְזָהָ֖ב

wə·zā·hāḇ

and gold ､

עָשׂ֥וּ

‘ā·śū

[Which] they prepared

. לַבָּֽעַל׃

lab·bā·‘al.

לָכֵ֣ן

lā·ḵên

､ אָשׁ֔וּב

’ā·šūḇ,

I will return ､

וְלָקַחְתִּ֤י

wə·lā·qaḥ·tî

דְגָנִי֙

ḏə·ḡā·nî

בְּעִתּ֔וֹ

bə·‘it·tōw,

וְתִירוֹשִׁ֖י

wə·ṯî·rō·wō·šî

and My new wine

בְּמֽוֹעֲד֑וֹ

bə·mō·w·‘ă·ḏōw;

וְהִצַּלְתִּי֙

wə·hiṣ·ṣal·tî

and will take back

צַמְרִ֣י

ṣam·rî

וּפִשְׁתִּ֔י

ū·p̄iš·tî,

and My linen

לְכַסּ֖וֹת

lə·ḵas·sō·wṯ

[Given] to cover

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃

‘er·wā·ṯāh.

her nakedness .

וְעַתָּ֛ה

wə·‘at·tāh

אֲגַלֶּ֥ה

’ă·ḡal·leh

I will uncover

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

נַבְלֻתָ֖הּ

naḇ·lu·ṯāh

לְעֵינֵ֣י

lə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

､ מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ

mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā;

of her lovers ､

וְאִ֖ישׁ

wə·’îš

and

לֹֽא־

lō-

no one

יַצִּילֶ֥נָּה

yaṣ·ṣî·len·nāh

shall deliver her

. מִיָּדִֽי׃

mî·yā·ḏî.

､ וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי֙

wə·hiš·bat·tî

And I will cause to cease ､

כָּל־

kāl-

מְשׂוֹשָׂ֔הּ

mə·śō·w·śāh,

､ חַגָּ֖הּ

ḥag·gāh

Her feast [days] ､

､ חָדְשָׁ֣הּ

ḥā·ḏə·šāh

Her New Moons ､

､ וְשַׁבַּתָּ֑הּ

wə·šab·bat·tāh;

and Her Sabbaths ､

וְכֹ֖ל

wə·ḵōl

and all

. מוֹעֲדָֽהּ׃

mō·w·‘ă·ḏāh.

her appointed feasts .

וַהֲשִׁמֹּתִ֗י

wa·hă·šim·mō·ṯî,

And I will destroy

גַּפְנָהּ֙

gap̄·nāh

､ וּתְאֵ֣נָתָ֔הּ

ū·ṯə·’ê·nā·ṯāh,

and her fig trees ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ אָמְרָ֗ה

’ā·mə·rāh,

she has said ､

אֶתְנָ֥ה

’eṯ·nāh

הֵ֙מָּה֙

hêm·māh

לִ֔י

lî,

to

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

נָֽתְנוּ־

nā·ṯə·nū-

לִ֖י

lî

me

מְאַֽהֲבָ֑י

mə·’a·hă·ḇāy;

וְשַׂמְתִּ֣ים

wə·śam·tîm

so I will make them

､ לְיַ֔עַר

lə·ya·‘ar,

a forest ､

וַאֲכָלָ֖תַם

wa·’ă·ḵā·lā·ṯam

and shall eat them

חַיַּ֥ת

ḥay·yaṯ

. הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

haś·śā·ḏeh.

of the field .

וּפָקַדְתִּ֣י

ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî

And I will punish

עָלֶ֗יהָ

‘ā·le·hā,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יְמֵ֤י

yə·mê

､ הַבְּעָלִים֙

hab·bə·‘ā·lîm

of the Baals ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

תַּקְטִ֣יר

taq·ṭîr

she burned incense

לָהֶ֔ם

lā·hem,

וַתַּ֤עַד

wat·ta·‘aḏ

and she decked herself

נִזְמָהּ֙

niz·māh

with her earrings

､ וְחֶלְיָתָ֔הּ

wə·ḥel·yā·ṯāh,

and jewelry ､

וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ

wat·tê·leḵ

and went

אַחֲרֵ֣י

’a·ḥă·rê

､ מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ

mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā;

וְאֹתִ֥י

wə·’ō·ṯî

but Me

שָׁכְחָ֖ה

šā·ḵə·ḥāh

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

God's Mercy to Israel

､ לָכֵ֗ן

lā·ḵên,

､ הִנֵּ֤ה

hin·nêh

אָֽנֹכִי֙

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

מְפַתֶּ֔יהָ

mə·p̄at·te·hā,

will allure her

וְהֹֽלַכְתִּ֖יהָ

wə·hō·laḵ·tî·hā

and will bring her

､ הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר

ham·miḏ·bār;

into the wilderness ､

וְדִבַּרְתִּ֖י

wə·ḏib·bar·tî

עַל‪‬‪‬

‘al-

to

. לִבָּֽהּ׃

lib·bāh.

וְנָתַ֨תִּי

wə·nā·ṯat·tî

And I will give

לָ֤הּ

lāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כְּרָמֶ֙יהָ֙

kə·rā·me·hā

､ מִשָּׁ֔ם

miš·šām,

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

עֵ֥מֶק

‘ê·meq

עָכ֖וֹר

‘ā·ḵō·wr

לְפֶ֣תַח

lə·p̄e·ṯaḥ

as a door

. תִּקְוָ֑ה

tiq·wāh;

of hope .

וְעָ֤נְתָה

wə·‘ā·nə·ṯāh

And she shall sing

､ שָּׁ֙מָּה֙

šām·māh

כִּימֵ֣י

kî·mê

as in the days

､ נְעוּרֶ֔יהָ

nə·‘ū·re·hā,

of her youth ､

וִּכְי֖וֹם‪‬

wiḵ·yō·wm

as in the day

עֲלֹתָ֥הּ

‘ă·lō·ṯāh

when she came up

מֵאֶֽרֶץ־

mê·’e·reṣ-

. מִצְרָֽיִם׃

miṣ·rā·yim.

of Egypt .

וְהָיָ֤ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall be

､ בַיּוֹם־

ḇay·yō·wm-

in day ､

הַהוּא֙

ha·hū

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

תִּקְרְאִ֖י

tiq·rə·’î

[That] you will call

– אִישִׁ֑י

’î·šî;

Me My Husband –

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

and no

תִקְרְאִי־

ṯiq·rə·’î-

לִ֥י

lî

to

ע֖וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

. בַּעְלִֽי׃

ba‘·lî.

Me My Master .

וַהֲסִרֹתִ֛י

wa·hă·si·rō·ṯî

For I will take

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁמ֥וֹת

šə·mō·wṯ

הַבְּעָלִ֖ים

hab·bə·‘ā·lîm

of the Baals

､ מִפִּ֑יהָ

mip·pî·hā;

from her mouth ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

and no

יִזָּכְר֥וּ

yiz·zā·ḵə·rū

they shall be remembered

ע֖וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

. בִּשְׁמָֽם׃

biš·mām.

by their name .

וְכָרַתִּ֨י

wə·ḵā·rat·tî

And I will make

לָהֶ֤ם

lā·hem

בְּרִית֙

bə·rîṯ

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

in day

הַה֔וּא

ha·hū,

עִם־

‘im-

with

חַיַּ֤ת

ḥay·yaṯ

､ הַשָּׂדֶה֙

haś·śā·ḏeh

of the field ､

וְעִם־

wə·‘im-

and with

ע֣וֹף

‘ō·wp̄

､ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim,

of the air ､

וְרֶ֖מֶשׂ

wə·re·meś

and [with] the creeping things

. הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh;

of the ground .

וְקֶ֨שֶׁת

wə·qe·šeṯ

And Bow

וְחֶ֤רֶב

wə·ḥe·reḇ

וּמִלְחָמָה֙

ū·mil·ḥā·māh

אֶשְׁבּ֣וֹר

’eš·bō·wr

I will shatter

מִן־

min-

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the earth ､

וְהִשְׁכַּבְתִּ֖ים

wə·hiš·kaḇ·tîm

and to make them lie down

. לָבֶֽטַח׃

lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ.

וְאֵרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ

wə·’ê·raś·tîḵ

And I will betroth you

לִ֖י

lî

to Me

– לְעוֹלָ֑ם

lə·‘ō·w·lām;

וְאֵרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ

wə·’ê·raś·tîḵ

and Yes I will betroth you

לִי֙

lî

to Me

､ בְּצֶ֣דֶק

bə·ṣe·ḏeq

in righteousness ､

､ וּבְמִשְׁפָּ֔ט

ū·ḇə·miš·pāṭ,

and justice ､

､ וּבְחֶ֖סֶד

ū·ḇə·ḥe·seḏ

and in lovingkindness ､

. וּֽבְרַחֲמִֽים׃

ū·ḇə·ra·ḥă·mîm.

and mercy .

וְאֵרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ

wə·’ê·raś·tîḵ

And I will betroth you

לִ֖י

lî

to Me

. בֶּאֱמוּנָ֑ה

be·’ĕ·mū·nāh;

in faithfulness .

וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ

wə·yā·ḏa·‘at

And you shall know

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

ס

וְהָיָ֣ה ׀

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall come to pass

､ בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

in day ､

הַה֗וּא

ha·hū,

､ אֶֽעֱנֶה֙

’e·‘ĕ·neh

[That] I will answer ､

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

אֶעֱנֶ֖ה

’e·‘ĕ·neh

I will answer

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם

haš·šā·mā·yim;

the heavens ､

וְהֵ֖ם

wə·hêm

and they

יַעֲנ֥וּ

ya·‘ă·nū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

the earth –

וְהָאָ֣רֶץ

wə·hā·’ā·reṣ

and the earth

תַּעֲנֶ֔ה

ta·‘ă·neh,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַדָּגָ֖ן

had·dā·ḡān

with grain ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ

hat·tî·rō·wōš

with new wine ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

– הַיִּצְהָ֑ר

hay·yiṣ·hār;

with oil –

וְהֵ֖ם

wə·hêm

and they

יַעֲנ֥וּ

ya·‘ă·nū

אֶֽת־

’eṯ-

-

. יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃

yiz·rə·‘el.

וּזְרַעְתִּ֤יהָ

ū·zə·ra‘·tî·hā

And I will sow her

לִּי֙

lî

– בָּאָ֔רֶץ

bā·’ā·reṣ,

in the earth –

וְרִֽחַמְתִּ֖י

wə·ri·ḥam·tî

and

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

לֹ֣א

lō

not

– רֻחָ֑מָה

ru·ḥā·māh;

[who had] obtained mercy –

וְאָמַרְתִּ֤י

wə·’ā·mar·tî

and I will say

לְלֹֽא־

lə·lō-

to not

､ עַמִּי֙

‘am·mî

to Lo-ammi ､

– עַמִּי־

‘am·mî-

My people –

אַ֔תָּה

’at·tāh,

וְה֖וּא

wə·hū

and he

､ יֹאמַ֥ר

yō·mar

. אֱלֹהָֽי׃

’ĕ·lō·hāy.

[You are] My God .
