John 3:1-15 - A Meeting With Nicodemus

¹ There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. ² This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou hast come as a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou doest, unless God be with him.

³ Jesus answered and said to him: Verily, verily I say to you, unless a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God.

⁴ Nicodemus said to him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb the second time, and be born?

⁵ Jesus answered: Verily, verily I say to you, unless a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is begotten of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is begotten of the Spirit, is spirit. ⁷ Wonder not that I said to you, you must all be born again, ⁸ The Spirit breathes where he pleases, and you hear his voice, but you know not whence he comes, and whither he goes; so is every one that is begotten of the Spirit.

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to him: How can these things be?

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him: Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not understand these things? ¹¹ Verily, verily, I say to you, we speak that which we know, and testify to that which we have seen; and you receive not our testimony. ¹² If I have told you of earthly things, and you believe not, how will you believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? ¹³ And no man has ascended into heaven, but he who came down from heaven, the Son of man, who is in heaven. ¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up; ¹⁵ that whoever believes on him may not perish, but have eternal life.
