Matthew 26:36-46 - The Prayer In Gethsemane
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he told the disciples, "Sit here till I go over there and pray." 37 But he took Peter and the two sons of Zebedaeus along with him; and when he began to feel distressed and agitated, 38 he said to them, "My heart is sad, sad even to death; stay here and watch with me." 39 Then he went forward a little and fell on his face praying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me. Yet, not what I will but what thou wilt."
40 Then he went to the disciples and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, "So the three of you could not watch with me for a single hour? 41 Watch and pray, all of you, so that you may not slip into temptation. The spirit is eager but the flesh is weak."
42 Again he went away for the second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done." 43 And when he returned he found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.
44 So he left them and went back for the third time, praying in the same words as before. 45 Then he went to the disciples and said to them, "Still asleep? still resting? The hour is near, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Come, get up and let us go. Here is my betrayer close at hand!"
32 Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he told his disciples, "Sit here till I pray." 33 But he took Peter and James and John along with him; and as he began to feel appalled and agitated, 34 he said to them, "My heart is sad, sad even to death; stay here and watch." 35 Then he went forward a little and fell to the earth, praying that the hour might pass away from him, if possible. 36 "Abba, Father," he said, "thou canst do anything. Take this cup away from me. Yet, not what I will but what thou wilt."
37 Then he came and found them asleep; so he said to Peter, "Are you sleeping, Simon? Could you not watch for a single hour? 38 Watch and pray, all of you, so that you may not slip into temptation. The spirit is eager but the flesh is weak."
39 Again he went away and prayed in the same words as before; 40 then he returned and found them once more asleep, for their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Then he came for the third time and said to them, "Still asleep? still resting? No more of that! The hour has come, here is the Son of man betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Come, get up, here is my betrayer close at hand."
39 Then he went outside and made his way to the Hill of Olives, as he was accustomed. The disciples followed him, 40 and when he reached the spot he said to them, "Pray that you may not slip into temptation." 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw and knelt in prayer, 42 saying, "Father, if it please thee, take this cup away from me. But thy will, not mine, be done."
43 [And an angel from heaven appeared to strengthen him; 44 he fell into an agony and prayed with greater intensity, his sweat dropping to the ground like clots of blood.] 45 Then rising from prayer he went to the disciples, only to find them asleep from sheer sorrow. 46 He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not slip into temptation."
