The three are spoken of as those whom Jesus loved. They resided at Bethany, where they were privileged to welcome the Lord Jesus as a guest. On one of these visits Mary took her place at the feet of the Lord, feasting upon the words that fell from His lips. Martha wanted her help, but the Lord declared that one thing was needful, and Mary had chosen that good part, which should not be taken away from her. Lu 10:38-42. The heart of Mary was riven at the death of Lazarus. Word had been sent to the Lord that he was sick, and yet He had not come. When Jesus arrived Mary exclaimed, as Martha had done previously, "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died:" but Mary said it at the feet of the Lord. Jesus wept, and Mary thus learned His sympathy, and had a fresh taste of the good part which death could not take from her. To Martha Jesus said that she should have her brother back, and should see the power of death broken by the One who was "the resurrection and the life;" but Mary had Himself. Joh 11:1-44.
Afterwards, when they made the Lord a supper, a few days before He suffered, Mary, in full appreciation of her Lord, anointed His head and His feet with costly ointment. Judas and others were indignant at what they called 'waste,' but the Lord defended Mary's action, and said He was being anointed for His burial: this act should be told of her in the whole world. Nothing was too costly to be spent upon such a Lord. Joh 12:1-8: cf. Mt 26:6-13; Mr 14:3-9. It should be noted that this is not the same event as that recorded in Lu 7:36-50.

Jesus was aware of this and said: Why do you trouble the woman? Her expression to me was good. The poor are always with you, but I am not always with you. She poured this ointment on my body to prepare me for burial. I tell you, Everywhere this good news is preached in the entire world, this good deed done by this woman will be spoken of in memory of her.

You always have the poor with you and you can do them good. You do not always have me. She did what she could! She anointed my body beforehand for burying. Truly I tell you everywhere the good news is preached through out the whole world, that which this woman has done will be spoken of for a memorial of her.
One of the Pharisees asked him to dine with him. He went to the Pharisee's house and sat down to eat. A sinful woman went to the Pharisee's house. She brought an alabaster vase filled with ointment. read more. Standing by his feet weeping, she wet his feet with her tears. She wiped them with the hair of her head. Then she kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. The Pharisee saw it and thought to himself if this man were a prophet he would know what kind of woman touched him. She is a sinner. Jesus said to Simon: I have something to tell you. He replied: What teacher? A certain lender had two debtors. One owed five hundred shillings and the other fifty. They did not have money to pay the debt so he forgave them both. Which of them did he love the most? Simon answered: I suppose it was the one whom he forgave the most. Jesus said: Your judgment is correct. Turning to the woman, he said to Simon: See this woman? I entered into your house and you gave me no water for my feet. She watered my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. You did not kiss me. Since the time I came in she has not ceased kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil. She anointed my feet with ointment. She loved much! She has many sins and they are forgiven. When little is forgiven, little love is shown. He said to her: Your sins are forgiven! Those who ate with him said within themselves: Who is this who even forgives sins? He said to the woman: You are saved because of your faith. Go in peace.
Along the way he entered a village. A woman named Martha received him into her house. Her sister Mary sat at the Lord's feet and heard his word. read more. Martha was worried about the housework. She approached Jesus and said: Lord do you not care that my sister does not help me? Tell her to help me. The Lord answered: Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. However one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the proper way and it shall not be taken away from her.
A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived at Bethany where his sisters Mary and Martha lived. This is the same Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick. read more. The sisters therefore sent for the Lord, They said: The one for whom you have great affection is sick. When Jesus heard it he said: This sickness will not end in death. It is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he heard the news he stayed where he was for two days. After this he said to the disciples: Let us go to Judea again. The disciples said: Rabbi, the Jews were seeking to stone you and you go there? Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks in the day he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. Then he told them: Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. I go to wake him out of sleep. The disciples said, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he would recover. Jesus spoke of his death. They thought he spoke of taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said plainly: Lazarus is dead! I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, for it will help you believe. Let us go to him. Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go that we may die with him. When Jesus arrived he found Lazarus had been in the grave four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away. Many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother. Martha went out to meet Jesus and Mary sat in the house. Martha said to Jesus: Lord if you had been here my brother would not have died. Even now I know that what ever you ask of God he will give it to you. Jesus replied: Your brother will rise again. Martha exclaimed: I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said: I am the resurrection and the life. He who puts active faith in me will live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and puts active faith in me will never die. Do you believe this? She said: Yes Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who is to come into the world. After she said this she went away and secretly called her sister Mary. She said: The teacher is here and calls you. Mary got up quickly and went to him. (Now Jesus had not yet arrived at the village and was still at the place where Martha met him.) The Jews were with her in the house, consoling her. They saw Mary get up quickly and leave. So they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary saw Jesus she fell down at his feet. She said: Lord; if you had been here my brother would not have died. Jesus groaned in his spirit and was troubled when he saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her weeping. He asked: Where have you laid him? They answered: Come and see Lord. Jesus wept. The Jews therefore said: Look how deeply he loved him! Some of them said: This man opened the eyes of the blind. Could he have prevented this man from dying? Again Jesus groaned in himself. He went to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid against it. Jesus said: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man said: Lord by now the body has decayed for he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her: Did I not say that if you believe you shall see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said: Father, I thank you that you hear me. I knew that you always hear me. But because of the crowd that stands here I said it, that they may believe that you did send me. After he finished he cried out loud: Lazarus, come out! He that was dead came out. He was bound hand and foot with grave-clothes and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus commanded them: Unwrap him and let him go.
Six days before the Passover Jesus traveled to Bethany. This was where Lazarus lived. He was the man Jesus raised from the dead. Jesus ate supper there. The house was filled with the odor of the ointment. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would betray him said: Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred danarii, and given to the poor? He did not say this because he cared for the poor. He was a thief. He had the moneybox and took away what was put in it. Jesus therefore replied: Let her alone that she may preserve it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.
