American
Were much used by the ancient Hebrews, not chiefly for medical purposes as among us, but as a luxury, Ru 3:3; Ps 104:15; Song 1:2; Mt 6:17; Lu 7:46. Their perfumery was usually prepared in olive oil, and not in volatile extracts and essences. The sacred ointment is described in Ex 30:22-33. The ointments of the rich were made of very costly ingredients, and their fragrance was highly extolled, Isa 39:2; Am 6:6; Mt 26:7-9; Joh 12:5. See ANOINTING.

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, And thou, take best spices of liquid myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon the half two hundred and fifty, and of sweet myrtle two hundred and fifty, read more. and of cassia five hundred, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin; and make of it an oil of holy ointment, a perfume of perfumery after the work of the perfumer: it shall be the holy anointing oil. Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any like it, after the preparation of it: it is holy holy shall it be unto you. Whoever compoundeth any like it, or whoever putteth any of it upon any strange thing, shall be cut off from his peoples.
Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thyself, and put thy raiment upon thee, and go down to the floor; make not thyself known to the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
