SEA in Scripture generally means the Mediterranean, when the context introduces no distinction by which the particular sea is defined, e.g. in Nu 33:8; Jos 24:6 f. etc. 'The Great Sea' is the Mediterranean (Nu 34:6; Eze 47:10 etc.). 'The Sea of the Arabah' is the Dead Sea (2Ki 14:25 etc.). The 'Sea of Chinnereth' is the Sea of Galilee (Nu 34:11 etc.). The earth was without form and an empty waste, and darkness was upon the face of the very great deep. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.
