The poor and needy search for water, but there is none! Their tongues are parched with thirst. But I Jehovah will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

My people will go into exile because they do not understand what I am doing. Honored men will starve, and common people will be parched with thirst.


([[Psalm of David] in the wilderness of Judah:]) O God, you are my God. At dawn I search for you. I thirst for you. My body longs for you in a dry, parched land where there is no water.

You will be like an oak whose leaves wither and like a garden without water.

He will be like a bush in the desert and will not see when prosperity comes. He will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, a land of salt without inhabitant.

In that day the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst.




Blessed are you who hunger now for you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now: for you shall laugh.

Call out for insight. Lift up your voice for understanding. Search for wisdom as if it were silver. Hunt for it as if it were hidden treasure! If you do these things you will have respect for Jehovah and you will find the true knowledge of God!

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the water. You, who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

Behold, the day is coming, said the Lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine in the land. Not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of Jehovah. They will wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east. They will run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and will not find it. I remember these things and I pour out my heart within me. I used to go along with the crowd and lead them in procession to the house of God, with the voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

But whoever drinks from the water that I give him will never thirst. The water that I will give him will be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said to him: Sir, give me this water! That way I will not thirst and not come here to draw.
