Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

For if we sin wilfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful hope of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

And king Herod heard of him (for his name was spread abroad), and he said, John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and therefore virtues operate in him.

Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the princes of the priests and the elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? Thou shalt see to it. And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself.

And those who heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest even unto the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman that had been in the midst.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy mercy; according unto the multitude of thy compassion eradicate my rebellion. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my rebellion; and my sin is ever before me. read more.
Against thee, against thee only, have I sinned and done this evil in thy sight that thou be declared just in thy word and pure in thy judgment.

Remove the sin in me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins and eradicate all my iniquities. read more.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy saving health, and thy spirit of liberty shall uphold me. Then I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

Truly my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my kidneys.

Therefore judgment has withdrawn from us, and righteousness has never overtaken us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness. We grope for the wall like the blind, and as if we had no eyes we walk by touch; we stumble at noonday as in the night; we are in graves as dead men. We all roar like bears and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for saving health, but it has withdrawn from us. read more.
For our rebellions are multiplied before thee, and our sins have testified against us; for our iniquities are with us; and we know our sins: To rebel and to lie against the LORD, and to depart away from our God; the speaking of libel and rebellion, to conceive, and to speak from the heart words of falsehood, and that which is right has departed, and righteousness withdrew afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity could not enter.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus and said unto his slaves, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him.

But when Herod heard of it, he said, This is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

and said, O my God, I am confused and ashamed to lift up my face to thee, my God, for our iniquities have multiplied over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto heaven.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone, until thy people pass over, O LORD, until the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors. As the dream of one who awakes; so, O Lord, when thou shalt rise up, thou shalt despise their appearances.

And I will cause them to lose the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp. And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment; and these Gentiles shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every house or city divided against itself will not remain. If Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. read more.
But if I with the finger of God cast out the demons, certainly the kingdom of God is come upon you. When an armed strong man keeps his palace, his goods are in peace; but when another stronger than he shall come upon him and overcome him, he takes from him all his arms in which he trusted and divides his spoils. He that is not with me is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters.

The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent. Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him. He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword. read more.
He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him. Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty, he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;

And Jesus knew their thoughts and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not remain; and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom remain? And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. read more.
But if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then certainly the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into the strong man's house and spoil his goods except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. He that is not with me is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters abroad.

Aleph Do not be angry with the evildoers, neither be thou envious of the workers of iniquity.

The tents of robbers are at ease, and those that provoke God and those who carry gods in their hands live secure.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Though a sinner does evil one hundred times and his judgment is prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with those that fear God, who fear before his presence; but it shall never be well with the wicked, neither shall his days be prolonged, which are as a shadow, because he did not fear before the presence of God.

Resh I have seen the wicked in great power and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

We say, therefore, now, that blessed are the proud and even that those that work wickedness are prospered; those that tempted God have escaped.

Why dost thou cause me to see iniquity and cause me to behold grievance and destruction and violence before me, in addition to those that raise up strife and contention? Therefore the law is weakened, and the judgment does not go forth true: for the wicked compasses about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceeds.

I have seen the foolish taking root, but at the same time I cursed his habitation. His sons are far from saving health, and they shall be crushed in the gate, and there shall be no one to deliver them. The hungry shall eat up his harvest, and even take it out from among the thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.

He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.

for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him.

Why do the wicked live and become old and even increase in riches? Their seed is with them, established in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes. Their houses are safe from fear; neither is the rod of God upon them. read more.
Their cows conceive, and do not abort; their cows calve and do not cast forth their young. They send forth their little ones like a flock of sheep, and their children dance. They jump at the sound of the timbrel and harp and rejoice at the sound of the organ. They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.

For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others. Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off. read more.
This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah. Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling. Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah.

For I became angry against the foolish when I saw the peace of the wicked. Because there is no restraint that would bring about their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. read more.
Therefore they are crowned with pride; they cover themselves with violence as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness; they easily obtain the desires of their heart. They are lawless and speak wickedly of doing violence; they speak loftily. They set their mouth against heaven, and their tongue walks through the earth. Therefore his people shall return here; and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. And they say, How does God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? Behold, these ungodly men, without being troubled by the world obtain riches. Verily, in vain have I cleansed my heart and washed my hands in innocency and been plagued all day long and chastened every morning: If I should say, I will speak as they do; behold, I should deny the generation of thy sons. I shall meditate that I might understand this; it is very hard for me to see. When I come into the sanctuary of God, then I shall understand their end. Truly my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my kidneys. But I was ignorant and did not understand; I was as a beast before thee.

A carnal man does not know, neither does a fool understand this: The wicked spring forth as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity blossom, so that they shall be destroyed for ever:

Righteous art thou, O LORD, even though I dispute with thee: even so, I will speak judgments with thee; Why does the way of the wicked prosper? All those that completely rebel against thee have peace. Thou hast planted them, and they have taken root: they grow, and they bring forth fruit; thou art near in their mouth and far from their kidneys.

Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on iniquity: why dost thou look upon those that deal treacherously and hold thy tongue when the wicked devour the man that is more righteous than he? And dost make men as the fishes of the sea, as reptiles that have no lord? He shall take up all of them with his hook; he shall catch them in his net and gather them in his drag: therefore, he shall rejoice and be glad. read more.
Therefore, he shall sacrifice unto his net and burn incense unto his drag because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous. Shall he therefore empty his net, or have pity to stop slaying Gentiles continually?

The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him. The steps of his strength shall be cut down, and his own counsel shall cast him down. read more.
For a net shall be cast at his feet, and he shall walk upon a network. The snare shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. The cord is hidden in the ground and a trap for him in the way. Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and his own feet shall drive him away. His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side. They shall devour the protection of his skin; the firstborn of death shall devour his members. His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. He shall dwell in his tent, as if it were not his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off. His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the streets. He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world. He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings. Those that come after him shall be dismayed at his day, as those that went before were overcome with fear. Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that does not know God.

Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good things from you.

This is the portion of a wicked man with God and the heritage of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty. If their sons are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. Those that remain of him shall be buried in death; and their widows shall not weep. read more.
Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. He built his house as a moth and as a booth that the keeper makes. The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered; he shall open his eyes and not see anyone. Terrors shall take hold on him as waters; a whirlwind shall carry him away in the night. The east wind shall take him away, and he shall depart; the storm shall catch him up out of his place. For God shall cast down on him and not spare; he would attempt to flee out of his hand. Men shall clap their hands at him, and from his place they shall hiss at him.

The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent. Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him. He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword. read more.

Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty, he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields; for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks; and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps. He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth. He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish. He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity. He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green. He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive. For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery. They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.

that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? Though his excellency mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches unto the clouds, yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; those who have seen him shall say, What is become of him? read more.
He shall fly away as a dream and shall not be found: yea, he shall flee away as a vision of the night. The eye which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place behold him any more. His poor sons shall go forth begging, and their hands shall restore that which he stole. His bones are full of the sins of his youth, which shall be buried with him in the dust. If wickedness was sweet in his mouth, if he hid it under his tongue, if it seemed good unto him, and he did not forsake it, but savored it within his mouth, his food shall be changed in his bowels, it shall be the gall of asps within him. He has swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly. He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper's tongue shall slay him. He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build, therefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired. Nothing is left that he did not eat; therefore, his goods shall not last. In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him. When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food. He shall flee from the weapons of iron, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. He shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him. All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent. The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath. This is the portion of a wicked man from God and the heritage that God appoints unto him by his word.

Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways. Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him? Behold that their good is not in their hands; the counsel of the wicked is far from me. How often is the lamp of the wicked put out and their destruction comes upon them, and God distributes sorrows upon them in his anger. They shall be as stubble before the wind and as chaff taken up by the whirlwind. God shall lay up his violence for their sons; and he will reward him so that he shall know it. His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty. For what delight shall he have in his house after him, being cut off in the number of his months? Shall he teach God knowledge, seeing he judges those that are high? This one shall die in the full strength of his beauty, being completely at ease and quiet. His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow. And another dies in the bitterness of his soul, never having eaten with pleasure. They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them. Behold, I know your thoughts and the imaginations which ye devise against me. For ye say, What is of the house of the prince, and what of the tent of the habitation of the wicked? Have ye not asked those that go by the way, and do ye not know their tokens? That the wicked is reserved for the day of destruction, they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. Who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he has done? He shall yet be brought to the grave and shall remain in the tomb. The clods of the river valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall be drawn after him, as there were innumerable before him.

Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks and feed thereof. They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow's ox for a pledge. They turn the needy out of the way; and all the poor of the earth hide themselves from them. read more.
Behold, as wild asses in the desert, they go forth to their work, rising early for a prey; the wilderness yields food for them and for their children. In the field they reap their fodder, and the wicked gather the vintage that is not theirs. They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. They are wet with the floods of the mountains and embrace the rock for want of a covering. They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor. They cause the naked to go without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry. They press oil within their walls and tread their winepresses and suffer thirst. Men groan from out of the city, and the souls of the dead cry out; yet God did not hinder them. They are among those that rebel against the light; they have never known its ways nor abided in its paths. The murderer rises with the light, kills the poor and the needy, and in the night is as a thief. The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguises his face. In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime; they do not know the light. For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; if they are known, the terrors of the shadow of death come over them. They are swift upon the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth; they never come by the way of the vineyards. Drought and heat consume the snow waters; so does Sheol consume those who have sinned. The Merciful One shall forget them; the worm shall feed sweetly on them; they shall never be remembered again; and iniquity shall be broken as a tree. He afflicted the barren woman that did not conceive and never did good unto the widow. He furthered the violent with his power; he did not lend to anyone in his life. If he gave credit to some to take them over, his eyes were upon their ways. They were exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all others and cut off as the tops of the heads of grain.

Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

and say unto the people of the land, Thus hath the Lord GOD said regarding the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the land of Israel. They shall eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with terror that her land may be desolate from all that is in it because of the violence of all those that dwell therein. And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be desolate; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

And it shall be that whoever will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of the hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt does not go up and does not come, there shall be no rain upon them; instead there shall be the plague, with which the LORD will smite the Gentiles that do not come up to celebrate the feast of the tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of the sin of Egypt and of the sin of all the Gentiles that do not come up to celebrate the feast of the tabernacles.
