and yet the warning continues to be spoken: "If you but hear His voice, you must not harden your hearts as they did in provoking me." For who was it that heard and yet provoked Him? Was it not all who came out of Egypt led by Moses? With whom was He disgusted forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the desert? To whom did He take oath that they should not be admitted to His rest, if it was not to those who disobeyed Him? So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they could not be admitted to it.
and yet he never staggered in doubt at the promise of God but grew powerful in faith, because he gave the glory to God
However, they have not all given heed to the good news, for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has put faith in what we told?"
For we have had the good news told to us as well as they, but the message heard did them no good, because they were not by faith made one with those who heeded it.
He went to His own home town, and kept teaching in their synagogue in such a way that they were dumbfounded, and said, "Where did He get this wisdom and this power to do such wonder-works? Is He not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother's name Mary, are not His brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? And are not His sisters all living here with us? Where then did He get all these things?"read more.
And so they found a cause for stumbling over Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet never fails to be honored except in his native neighborhood and in his own home." And so He did not do many wonder-works there, because of their lack of faith.
He left there and went back to His hometown, and His disciples followed Him. When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue. And the people were dumbfounded when they heard Him, and said, "Where did He get all these things? What sort of wisdom is it that has been given Him? And such mighty deeds are done by Him! Is He not the carpenter, Mary's son, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And do not His sisters live here among us?" And so they found a cause for stumbling over him.read more.

He could not do any mighty deeds there, except that He put His hands on a few ailing people and cured them. And He wondered at their lack of faith in Him. Then He made a circle of the villages and continued teaching.
Then Jesus in the power of the Spirit returned to Galilee, and news of Him spread all over the surrounding country. Meanwhile He began to teach in their synagogues, and was continuously receiving praise from all. The roll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him, and He unrolled it and found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has consecrated me to preach the good news to the poor; He has sent me to announce release to captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to send the downtrodden away in liberty and to announce the year of favor from the Lord." Then He rolled up the roll and gave it back to the attendant and took His seat. Now the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were gazing at Him. Then He began to speak to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled here in your hearing." So they all began to speak well of Him and to wonder at the gracious words that fell from His lips, and yet they continued to say, "Is He not Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, cure yourself! Do the things here in your hometown that we hear you did in Capernaum.'" He added, "I solemnly say to you, no prophet is welcome in his native neighborhood. But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the heaven was closed for three years and a half, and there was a great famine over all the land, and yet Elijah was not sent to a single one of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. And there were many lepers in Israel in Elisha's time, and yet not one of them was cured except Naaman the Syrian." Then all the people in the synagogue, on hearing these things, were filled with fury, and they rose up and drove Him out of town and took Him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, to hurl Him down the cliff. But He Himself passed through the midst of them and went on His way.
At that time some people brought to Him a man under the power of demons, who was blind and dumb, and He cured him, so that the dumb man could talk and see. And all the crowds of people were dumbfounded, and began to say, "He is by no means the Son of David, is He?" But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This man is not driving out demons except by the help of Beelzebub, the prince of the demons."
And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem kept saying, "He is under the spell of Beelzebub and by the help of the prince of the demons He drives out the demons."
Now He was driving a dumb demon out of a man, and when the demon went out of him, the dumb man spoke. The crowds were astonished. But some of them said, "It is with the help of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that He is driving the demons out." But others, to test Him, were demanding from Him a spectacular sign from heaven.
"Tell us, if you are the Christ." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe me,
yes, the Father who has sent me has testified to me Himself. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form; and you do not keep His message living in you, because you do not believe in the messenger whom He has sent.
But I have told you that, although you have seen me, yet you do not believe in me.
So the Jews surrounded Him and kept asking Him, "How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are really the Christ, tell us so plainly." Jesus answered them, "I have already told you so, but you do not believe me. The works which I am doing on my Father's authority are my credentials, but still you do not believe in me, for you do not belong to my sheep.
So to you who put your trust in Him the honor belongs, but to those who fail to trust Him: "That stone which then the builders threw away Has now become the cornerstone,"
I most solemnly say to you, we know what we are talking about and we have seen what we are testifying to, yet you are all rejecting our testimony. If you do not believe the earthly things I tell you, how can you believe the heavenly things, if I tell you about them?
For if you really believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you ever believe what I say?"
Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders, you will never believe."
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him as follows: "Teacher, we would like to see a spectacular sign given by you." But He answered, "Only a wicked and treacherous age is hankering for a spectacular sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Now as the crowds continued to throng upon Him, He began to say: "This is a wicked age. It is looking for a spectacular sign, but none will be given it but the sign of Jonah.
"It is a wicked and immoral age that is hankering for a spectacular sign, so no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah." Then He left them and went away.
But He sighed in spirit and said, "Why do the people of these times ask for a spectacular sign? I solemnly say, no sign at all will be given them."
But others, to test Him, were demanding from Him a spectacular sign from heaven.
For John came to you walking in the way of uprightness, and yet you did not believe him. The tax-collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, even though you saw that, would not change your minds afterward and believe him.
But the Jews stirred up the devout women of high rank and the men of first rank in town, and so started a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.
But the Jews who refused to accept their message aroused and exasperated the minds of the heathen against the brothers.
But when the Jews at Thessalonica learned that God's message had been proclaimed at Berea by Paul, they came there too to excite the masses and stir up a riot.
But as some of them grew harder and harder and refused to believe, actually criticizing The Way before the people, he left them, withdrew his disciples, and continued his discussions in the lecture-hall of Tyrannus.
Some of them were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.
To the pure everything is pure, but to the impure and unbelieving nothing is pure, but their very minds and consciences are impure.
For God's anger from heaven is being uncovered against all the impiety and wickedness of the men who in their wickedness are suppressing the truth;
so that all who have refused to believe the truth but have chosen unrighteousness instead might be condemned.
and that we may be delivered from unprincipled and wicked men; for not all men have faith.
though I once used to abuse, persecute, and insult Him. But mercy was shown me by Him, because I did it in ignorance and unbelief,
But the Jews did not believe that he had really been blind and that he had come to see again, until they called the parents of the man who saw again,
The Jews again picked up stones to stone Him. Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good deeds from my Father. For which of them are you going to stone me?" The Jews retorted, "It is not for a good deed but for blasphemy we are going to stone you; namely, because you, although a mere man, claim to be God."
Although He had performed so many wonder-works right before their eyes, they did not believe in Him,
If I am not doing the things that my Father is doing, do not believe me. But if I am doing so, even if you will not believe me, believe the deeds, that you may come to know and continue to know that the Father is in union with me and I am in union with the Father."
But how can people call upon One in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in One about whom they have not heard? And how can people hear without someone to preach to them? And how can men preach unless they are sent to do so? As the Scripture says, "How beautiful are the feet of men who bring the glad news of His good things!"
So speaking in ecstasy is meant as a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is meant, not for unbelievers but for believers. Hence, if the whole church has met and everybody speaks in ecstasy, and illiterate people or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are crazy? But if everybody prophesies, and some unbeliever or illiterate man comes in, he is convinced of his sins by all, he is closely questioned by all,
You married women, in the same way, must be submissive to your husbands, so that, if any of them do not believe the message, they may be won over without a word through the living of the wives,
