A man’s gift [given in love or courtesy] makes room for him
And brings him before great men.
“Those [who are] abundant in years may not [always] be wise,
Nor may the elders [always] understand justice.
Do not be boastfully ambitious and claim honor in the presence of the king,
And do not stand in the place of great men;
So I became great and excelled more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also remained with me.

But there is [a vital force] a spirit [of intelligence] in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives men understanding. It is not the great [necessarily] who are wise, nor [always] the aged who understand justice.
