beginning from the baptism of John until the day [on] which he was taken up from us--one of these [men] must become a witness of his resurrection together with us."

Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River [as they] confessed their sins. But [when he] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? read more.
Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!


Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John in order to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him, saying, "{I need} to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered [and] said to him, "Permit [it] now, for in this way it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted him. read more.
Now [after he] was baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water, and behold, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove coming upon him.

From where was the baptism of John--from heaven or from men?" And they began to discuss [this] among themselves, saying, "If we say 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." And it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. And immediately [as he] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being split apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.

The baptism of John--was [it] from heaven or from men? Answer me!"

Therefore he was saying to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance! And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham [as] father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"

Now it happened that when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and [while he] was praying, heaven was opened,

(And all the people, [when they] heard [this]--even the tax collectors--affirmed the righteousness of God, [because they] had been baptized [with] the baptism of John, but the Pharisees and the legal experts rejected the purpose of God for themselves, [because they] had not been baptized by him.)

The baptism of John--was [it] from heaven or from men?

And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water. In your midst stands [one] whom you do not know--

These [things] took place in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

And I did not know him, but in order that he could be revealed to Israel, because of this I came baptizing with water."

And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, '[The one] upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him--this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and they were coming and were being baptized.

And he went away again on the other side of the Jordan, to the place where John was baptizing at an earlier time, and he stayed there.


you know the thing that happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism that John proclaimed:

And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into the baptism of John." And Paul said, "John baptized [with] a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who was to come after him--that is, in Jesus."



And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I [am], whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing shovel [is] in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John in order to be baptized by him. read more.

And [while] the people were waiting expectantly and all were pondering in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than I [am] is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing shovel [is] in his hand, to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." read more.

But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and concerning all the evil deeds that Herod had done, added this also to them all: he also locked up John in prison. On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This one is [the one] about whom I said, 'After me is coming a man who is ahead of me, because he existed before me.' And [when they] heard [this], they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And [when] Paul laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy.



And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

Now in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the Judean wilderness and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!" For this is the one who was spoken about by the prophet Isaiah, saying, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" read more.
Now John himself had his clothing made from camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River [as they] confessed their sins. But [when he] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

Now it happened that when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and [while he] was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."


And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, "Who are you?" And he confessed--and he did not deny, and confessed--"I am not the Christ!" And they asked him, "Then who [are] you? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No!" read more.
Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight! Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be leveled, and the crooked will become straight, and the rough road [will become] smooth, and all flesh will see the salvation of God.'"

And he answered [and] said, "Elijah indeed is coming, and will restore all [things].

Just as it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths!'" John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. read more.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit [while he is] still in his mother's womb. And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare for the Lord a people made ready."

And so you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the merciful compassion of our God by which the dawn will visit to help us from on high, read more.
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace."

This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. That one was not the light, but [came] in order that he could testify about the light.

John testified about him and cried out, saying, "This one was [he about] whom I said, 'The one who comes after me is ahead of me, because he existed before me.'"

Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I [am] 'the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," ' just as Isaiah the prophet said." (And they had been sent from the Pharisees.) read more.

There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. (And I do not receive testimony from people, but I say these [things] in order that you may be saved.) read more.
That one was the lamp [which was] burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice for an hour in his light.

Before {his coming} John had publicly proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. But while John was completing [his] mission, he said, 'What do you suppose me to be? I am not [he]! But behold, one is coming after me of whom I am not worthy to untie the sandals of [his] feet!'

On the next day again John was standing [there], and two of his disciples, and looking at Jesus [as he] was walking by, he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!"

Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and they were coming and were being baptized. (For John had not yet been thrown into prison.) So a dispute occurred on the part of John's disciples with a Jew concerning purification. read more.
And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, about whom you testified--look, this one is baptizing, and all are coming to him!" John answered and said, "A man can receive not one [thing] unless it is granted to him from heaven! You yourselves testify about me that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I am sent before that one.' The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices {greatly} because of the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine is complete. It is necessary for that one to increase, but [for] me to decrease." The one who comes from above is over all. The one who is from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth; the one who comes from heaven is over all. What he has seen and heard, this he testifies, and no one accepts his testimony. The one who accepts his testimony has attested that God is true. For [the one] whom God sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit by measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all [things] into his hand. The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who disobeys the Son will not see life--but the wrath of God remains on him.

There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.

And many came to him and began to say, "John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true!"
