Jesus being invited to dinner at a certain Pharisee's house, he went home with him, and sat down to table. when a woman of that city, one that had led a loose life, knowing that Jesus was at table in the Pharisee's house, came in with a vial of odoriferous liquor, and stood behind at his feet weeping, bath'd them with her tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed his feet, and poured the perfume upon them.




then Jesus wept. upon which the Jews said, see how he loved him.

we are now going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, and deliver him up to the Gentiles, to be insulted, scourged, and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again.

but he answered them, this wicked degenerate race demand a miracle; but no other miracle shall they have, except that of the prophet Jonas. for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

When they were on the road to Jerusalem, Jesus led the way, and they followed behind full of apprehension and fear. then Jesus calling the twelve apostles to him again, acquainted them with what should befal him. now, said he, we are going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be delivered up to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, and deliver him to the Gentiles. they will treat him with ignominy, subject him to the lash, spit upon him, and at last put him to death. but on the third day he will rise again.

the son of man must suffer many indignities: be rejected by the rulers, the chief priests, and Scribes: be put to death: and the third day be raised again. Then he said to the whole company, if any one will be my follower, let him renounce himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. for whoever would save his life, shall lose it: and he that would lose his life, out of love to me, shall save it.

Afterwards Jesus took the twelve aside, and said to them, now we are going to Jerusalem where all that the prophets have writ concerning the son of man shall be accomplished. for he shall be delivered to the Gentiles by the Jews, who will treat him with mockery, insult him, spit in his face, scourge him, and put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again.

I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. read more.
When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it. and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him. then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly.

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, you cannot at present follow me, where I am going; but hereafter you shall. Peter said to him, Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

yet there's the hand that is to seize me, now upon the table. the son of man indeed must die, as it was decreed: but wo to that man by whom he is betrayed. upon this they began to enquire of one another, which of them it was that should do such an action.

he that says, he is in the light, and yet hates his brother, is still in darkness. he that loves his brother, abides in the light, and will be secure from stumbling.

as for us, we know, that we have passed from a state of death to that of life, because we love our brethren: he that does not love his brother, is in a destructive state. whosoever hateth his brother, has the disposition of a murderer: and you know that no murderer has any title to eternal life. this is the proof of the divine love, Christ expos'd his life for us: and we ought to expose our lives for the brethren. read more.
he that possesses the enjoyments of life, and seeing his brother in want, has no compassion for him, how can he be said to have any divine love? my dear children, let not our love be only in the language of our lips, but in the real effects of the heart.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth, is born of God, and knoweth God. he that has not social affection, does not know God; for God is love. by this was the love of God displayed towards us, in that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live thro' him. read more.
and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins. beloved, if God so loved us, we ought to love one another.
