And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and they twisted a crown of thorns and put it on him. And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they struck him on the head with a reed and spat on him; and falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.

Pilate then called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, and said to them, "You have brought this man to me as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. And behold, having examined him in your presence, I have found no guilt in this man concerning those charges which you make against him; neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold, nothing deserving death has been done by him; read more.
I will therefore chastise him and release him." But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas" a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder. Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed to them again. But they shouted, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Then he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no crime deserving death. I will therefore chastise him and release him." But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified. And their voices prevailed. So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted. And he released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will. And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.

Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you, Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?" read more.
For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed him over. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered greatly today in a dream because of him." But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor answered them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas!" Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!" And he said, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Let him be crucified!" When Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves." And all the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!" Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Now at the feast he was accustomed to release for them one prisoner whom they requested. And with the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he had always done for them. read more.
But Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. And Pilate again said to them, "Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?" And they cried out again, "Crucify him!" And Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!" So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged him, to be crucified.

But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" Then they all cried again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.

So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands. read more.
Pilate went out again, and said to them, "See, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him." So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!" When the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "You take him and crucify him, for I find no fault in him." The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid, and he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?" Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered me to you has the greater sin." From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Anyone who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar." When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" But they cried out, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no King but Caesar." Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus.
