and began to accuse him, saying, 'This one we found perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying himself to be Christ a king.' And Pilate questioned him, saying, 'Thou art the king of the Jews?' and he answering him, said, 'Thou dost say it.'


And Pilate also wrote a title, and put it on the cross, and it was written, 'Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;' this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman. And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death; and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover; Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, 'What accusation do ye bring against this man?' they answered and said to him, 'If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.' read more.
Pilate, therefore, said to them, 'Take ye him -- ye -- and according to your law judge him;' the Jews, therefore, said to him, 'It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;' that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.
