for who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counsellor? Verse ConceptsGod, Human Descriptions OfGod's ThoughtsKnowing God's CharacterThe MindThoughts

for who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counsellor? who hath given any thing to him, and he will repay it? for of him, and through him, and in him are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

O the depth of the divine goodness, wisdom, and contrivance! how impenetrable are his decrees, and his ways past finding out! for who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counsellor?

this is what God has revealed to us by his spirit: for the spirit penetrates into all things, even the profound counsels of God. for who knows the thoughts of a man, but the spirit of man which is in him? even so the thoughts of God no one can know, but the spirit of God.

However, what we preach is wisdom, to those who are thoroughly instructed: yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who will soon come to nothing. but we explain that mysterious plan of divine wisdom, which God had contriv'd before the ages, for our glory: which none of the rulers of this age understood: for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputant of this age? has not God prov'd the wisdom of this world to be downright folly. for whereas the world, with all their learning, did not distinguish the characters of his divine wisdom, in his works, it pleased God to save those who believe, by preaching, which they counted folly. while the Jews require signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom: read more.
we preach Christ crucified, an obstacle to the Jews indeed, and to the Gentiles foolishness: but to those who believe, both Jews and Gentiles, he is the Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God. for this divine doctrine, as foolish and weak as men may think it, far surpasses all their wisdom, and baffles all their power.
