And immediately the Spirit leadeth him out into the wilderness. And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild-beasts; and the angels served him.

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil taking him up into an high mountain, shewed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment. And the devil said to him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them; for it is delivered to me, and I give it to whomsoever I will. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answering said to him, Get thee hence, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the battlement of the temple, and said, If thou be the son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall charge his angels concerning thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said to him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And the devil, having ended all the temptation, departed from him till a convenient season.
