Exhort servants to be subject to their own masters, and to please them well in all things, not contradicting, not stealing, but showing all good faithfulness, that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in all things. For the grace of God, which brings salvation to all men, has appeared, teaching us, that denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in the present age; looking for the blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. one that rules his own house well; having his children in subjection with all gravity: for if a man knows not how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God? Not a new convert, lest, having become conceited, he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Further, he must have a good reputation from those who are without, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. The deacons, likewise, must be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not makers of money by base means, holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also be first proved, then let them become deacons, being blameless. Their wives likewise must be grave, not slanderers, watchful, faithful in all things.
