promising them liberty, they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom anyone has been overcome, even to this one he has been enslaved.

Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever practices sin is the slave of sin.

(For many are walking, of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, as the enemies of the cross of Christ; whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, those who mind earthly things.)

Let the aged women likewise be in reverent behavior, not slanderers, not enslaved by much wine, teachers of good;

For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. What fruit did you have then in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whoever goes astray by it is not wise.

He who loves pleasure shall be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil shall not be rich.

But they who will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which plunge men into destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all evils, of which some having lusted after, they were seduced from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Come now, rich ones, weep and howl for your hardships coming on. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes have become moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their poison will be a witness against you, and will eat your flesh as fire. You heaped treasure in the last days.

All things are lawful to me, but not all things profit. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
