You, O king, saw, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and its form was frightening. You saw till a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passes away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

Will you break a leaf driven to and fro? and will you pursue the dry stubble?

The arrow cannot make him flee: clingstones with him are turned into stubble.

You shall conceive chaff, you shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

How often is the lamp of the wicked put out! and how often comes their destruction upon them! God distributes sorrows in his anger. They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away.

Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt. Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them. Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the LORD persecute them.
