they gave Him some wine mixed with gall, but when He tasted it, He would not drink it.

For I know that nothing good has its home in me; that is, in my lower self; I have the will but not the power to do what is right. Indeed, I do not do the good things that I want to do, but I do practice the evil things that I do not want to do. But if I do the things that I do not want to do, it is really not I that am doing these things, but it is sin which has its home within me.

I beg you, therefore, brothers, through these mercies God has shown you, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies as a living sacrifice, devoted and well-pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service.

Or, are you not conscious that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit that is in you, whom you have as a gift from God? Furthermore, you are not your own, for you have been bought and actually paid for. So you must honor God with your bodies.

No temptation has taken hold of you but what is common to human nature. And God is to be trusted not to let you be tempted beyond your strength, but when temptation comes, to make a way out of it, so that you can bear up under it.

Do not be so misled: "Evil companionships corrupt good character."

I mean this: Practice living by the Spirit and then by no means will you gratify the cravings of your lower nature.

So let us stop sleeping as others do, but let us stay awake and keep sober.

Therefore, as a means of spiritual preparation, tighten up the belt about your minds, keep perfectly calm, keep your hope on the spiritual blessing to be conferred upon you at the unveiling of Jesus Christ.

But the end of everything on earth is near. So be serious and sober minded, that you may give yourselves to prayer.

Be calm and alert. Your opponent the devil is always prowling about like a roaring lion, trying to devour you.
