For there are many disorderly persons vainly talkative, and under a spirit of delusion, especially some of the circumcised; whose mouths ought to be muzzled, who pervert whole families, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of base gain.
to slander no man, to be inoffensive, gentle, shewing all meekness to all men.
If any man thinks he is a religious character among you, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
So also the tongue is a little member, and proudly vaunts. Behold how great a pile of wood, a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: in such manner is the tongue placed among our members, that it defileth all the body, and setteth on fire the circle of nature; and is set on fire of hell. For every species of wild beasts, and also of birds, of reptiles, and even of fishes, is tamed, and hath also been tamed by human ingenuity:read more.
but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless God even the Farther; and with the same we curse men, though after the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth goeth forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be thus.
Traduce not one another, brethren. He that traduceth his brother, and judgeth his brother, traduceth the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but as judge.
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have spoken craftily; the poison of asps is under their lips:
Wherefore putting away lying, speak truth, every one with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
Let no loose discourse proceed out of your mouth, but whatever is good for useful edification, that it may communicate grace to the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye have been sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and scandal, be removed from you, with all malice:
or obscenity, or foolish talk, or loose witticisms; things which become not [a Christian], but rather thanksgiving.
