If anyone thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives himself, his religious observances are of no account.
For "Let him who would enjoy life And see happy days, Keep his tongue from evil, And his lips from uttering deceit.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices, And my body will still live in hope.
So make up your minds not to prepare your defense, for I will give you such wisdom of utterance as none of your opponents will be able to resist or dispute.

If we put bridles into horses' mouths to make them obey us, we can guide their whole bodies. And the tongue is a fire, a world of wrong the tongue proves in our bodies, soiling the whole body and setting fire to the whole round of nature, and set on fire itself by hell. For every kind of animal and bird, reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by man, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is an irreconcilable evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord our Father, and with it we curse men made in God's likeness. Blessing and cursing issue from the same mouth! This is not right, my brothers.
