that we may be no longer children, driven about like waves and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the art of men, and the craftiness of deceitful wiles,

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before concerning you, that by them you may perform an honorable service, having faith and a good conscience, which some having cast away have suffered shipwreck of the faith; of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

But profane and vain words, avoid; for they greatly increase impiety, and their word will eat like a gangrene; of whom are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have erred from the truth, saying that the resurrection has passed already, and overturn the faith of some.

For there are many disorderly wranglers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whom it is necessary to silence, who mislead whole families, teaching for base gain what they ought not.
