And his disciples asked him, What does this parable mean? And he said, It is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
This I say then and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the other gentiles walk, in the vanity of their minds, with their understandings darkened, alienated from the life of God on account of the ignorance which is in them, on account of the hardness of their hearts, who being without feeling have given themselves up to lewdness, to commit every impurity with greediness.
And he that received seed among thorns is he that hears the word, and the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
And those sown among thorns are different. They are those who hear the word, and the cares of life, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires of other things coming in, choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Then the commander going away with the officers brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned; and having brought them they placed them before the Sanhedrim. And the chief priest asked them, saying, We charged you strictly not to teach in this name, and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and wish to bring this man's blood on us.
Stiff necked, and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always fight against the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, you also do. Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you now have become betrayers and murderers, who have received the law by orders of angels and have not kept it.
And going into the synagogue he spoke boldly, for three months, reasoning and persuading in favor of the kingdom of God. But when some were hardened and believed not, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples from them, and reasoned day by day in the school of one Tyrannus.
AND when the seven days were nearly completed, the Jews from Asia seeing him in the temple excited all the multitude, and laid hands on him, crying, Men of Israel, help; this is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place, and besides he has brought Greeks into the temple, and defiled this holy place. And at that time there was a great persecution of the church at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad through the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And pious men buried Stephen and made a great lamentation for him. But Saul persecuted the church, and going from house to house, seizing men and women, committed them to prison.
therefore we were comforted, brothers, on your account in all our affliction and distress by your faith,
and the word of the Lord was spread through all the country. But the Jews excited the pious and honorable women, and the first men of the city, and raised a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and cast them out from their limits.
