Now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals Jehovah God had made. He said to the woman: Did God really say, you must not eat from any tree in the garden? The woman said to the serpent: We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. However, God did say: 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You will not die, the serpent said to the woman. God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened. Then you will be like God, knowing good and evil. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened. They realized they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. The man and his wife heard the sound (voice) of Jehovah God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. They hid from Jehovah, among the trees of the garden. But Jehovah God called to the man: Where are you? He (Adam) answered: I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid. And he said: Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? Adam said: The woman you put here with me gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it. Then Jehovah God said to the Eve: What is this you have done? The woman answered: The serpent deceived me, and I ate.

Jehovah God commanded the man: You are free to eat from any tree in the garden. But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When you eat of it you will surely die.

Jehovah said: The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.

When those of the nations, who have no law, practice by nature the things of the law they are a law to themselves even though they do not have any law. They show the work of the law written in their hearts. Their conscience also bears witness, and their thoughts accuse or excuse them.

Later David's conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul's robe. He told his men: Stop talking foolishly. We are not going to attack Saul. He is my king. I pray that Jehovah will keep me from doing anything to harm his chosen king.

After David had everyone counted, he felt guilty and told Jehovah: What I did was stupid and terribly wrong. Jehovah, please forgive me.

No flesh will be justified before God by works of the law. Knowledge of sin comes from the law.

Until the law sin was in the world. Sin is not imputed (put on account) when there is no law.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid! I had not known sin except through the law. For I had not known coveting except the law had said: You should not covet.

You must also teach the people of Israel everything that I commanded Moses to say to them.

Israel, listen to these laws and teachings! If you obey them you will live! Go in and take the land that Jehovah the God of your fathers is giving you.

But you stay here with me. I will give you all the commands, laws, and rules that you must teach them to obey in the land I will give them to possess.

These words that I command you this day must be in your heart. Carefully teach them to your sons. Talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away. For if I do not go away the helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send it to you.
