If we say that we are without sin, we deceive ourselves, and have no regard to truth. if we confess our sins, as he is faithful and just, he will forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all iniquity. if we say that we have not sinned, we impeach his veracity, and discredit his word.
if we keep his commandments, that is a proof that we know him. he that says, he knows him, and does not keep his commandments, is a lyar, and an enemy to the truth:
and I am prepar'd, when you have discharg'd your duty, to make examples of the rest for their disobedience.
let no man mislead you by vain reasonings: for it is for these vices, that the wrath of God lights upon the incredulous.
and which the architects rejected, will be an occasion to the incredulous of their stumbling, and bruising themselves thereby:
he that possesses the enjoyments of life, and seeing his brother in want, has no compassion for him, how can he be said to have any divine love?
for if you only love those, who love you, where's the obligation? the very heathen return love for love. if you return one kind office by another, where's the obligation? the heathen themselves do as much. if you lend with the expectation of gaining by it, where's the obligation? for the heathen lend to one another, for the prospect of an equivalent.
As for you, my son, strenuously acquit yourself of the charge you have receiv'd from Christ Jesus. and what you heard me deliver in the presence of many, intrust to such persons of integrity as are qualified to instruct others bravely endure hardships, like a soldier of Jesus Christ.read more.
