13 Bible Verses about Moderation

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, temperance; against such things as these there is no law.

For the grace of God, that bringeth salvation to all men, was manifested, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in the present world;

Again ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, "Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform to the Lord thine oaths." But I say to you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King;read more.
nor shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your language be, Yea, yea; Nay; nay; for whatever is more than these cometh of evil.

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every one.

And be not drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness, but be filled with the Spirit,

Let us not sleep, then, as others, but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunken, are drunken in the night; but let us, as we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation;

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, discreet, orderly, hospitable, apt in teaching; not given to wine, not a striker, but forbearing, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money;

For a bishop must be without reproach, as Gods steward; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, not a striker, not greedy of base gain, but hospitable, a lover of what is good, discreet, just, holy, temperate,

that aged men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience; that aged women likewise be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is good, that they may teach the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,read more.
to be discreet, chaste, workers at home, good, in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. The younger men likewise exhort to be soberminded; in all things showing thyself a pattern of good works, in teaching showing uncorruptness, gravity, sound speech that cannot be condemned; that he that is opposed to us may be put to shame, having no evil thing to say of us.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithes of the mint, and the dill, and the cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the Law, justice, and mercy, and faith; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave those undone. Blind guides! who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but within they are full of robbery and licentiousness.read more.
Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup, that its outside side also may become clean.

How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a lesson of instruction, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation; let all things be done for edification. If any one speak in an [unknown] tongue, let it be by two, or, at the most, by three, and in turn; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.read more.
And of the prophets let two or three speak, and let the others judge; if anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first speaker be silent. For one by one ye can all prophesy, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted. And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou wert cold or hot. So then, because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am about to vomit thee out of my mouth.

And to the angel of the church in Sardes write: These things saith he who hath the seven spirits of God, and the seven stars: I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the remaining things, that were ready to die; for I have not found thy works perfect before my God.
