Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son; but according to the mercy that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me and to the land in which thou hast sojourned.
Or what king going to make war against another king does not sit down first and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and desires conditions of peace.
And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? Ho, every one that thirsts, come ye to the waters, and he that has no money; come ye, buy, and eat; come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are in it? That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked and that the righteous should be treated as the wicked that are far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes; peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it. And he spoke unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord now be angry if I shall speak; peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there. And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord; peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once; peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. And the LORD went away as soon as he had left communing with Abraham; and Abraham returned unto his place.
And the boys grew, and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was an upright man, remaining in the tents. And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his venison; but Rebekah loved Jacob. And Jacob boiled pottage; and Esau came from the field, and he was faint;read more.
