but they did not comprehend the meaning, and were ashamed to ask him about it.

but they did not comprehend that expression: it was as a riddle, which they could not understand, and they were afraid to desire him to explain the meaning of that expression.

but not a man was able to answer him a word, and from that time there was no body so hardy as to ask him any more questions.
