Charge those who are rich in this age, that they be not proud, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us all things richly for our enjoyment,

Your wealth is corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten:

because you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver or gold, from your vain mode of life received by tradition from your fathers,

saying: Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! for in one hour, so great riches have been brought to ruin. And every master of a ship, and every one in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood far off,

He that received seed among the thorns, is he that hears the word; and the cares of this age, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal.
