And they took him, and brought him to Mars hill, saying: Are we able to understand what this new teaching is, which is announced by you? For you bring some strange things to our ears: we wish to understand then what these things mean. For all the Athenians and resident strangers have leisure for nothing else than to tell or to hear some new thing.
See that no one make you the victims of imposture by means of philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the rudiments of the world, and not ac cording to Christ:
And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns and I will build larger ones; and there I will store ail my produce, and my good things; and I will say to my soul: Soul, you have many good things laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.
Charge those who are rich in this age, that they be not proud, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us all things richly for our enjoyment,
For the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
But God said to him: Senseless man, this night shall your soul be required of you; and who shall have the things which you have provided?
For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; and I will set aside the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of- this world?
Yet we speak wisdom among the perfect; but not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are brought to nought:
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out.
For the sun rises with its burning heat, and withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beauty of its form perishes. So, also, shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
And he spoke this parable to some, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and who despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.read more.
I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess.
For not even do those very men, who are circumcised, keep the law: but they wish you to be circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.
For we are the circumcision, who worship God in spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh;
Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped your fields, which has been unjustly withheld by you, cries out: and the cries of those who have reaped, have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and killed the Just One: and he does not set himself against you.
And what further shall I say? For the time would fail me, were I to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah, of David also and Samuel, and of the prophets, who, through faith, subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, closed the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
