When Jesus heard it he said, "Those who are strong have no need of a doctor, but those who are ill. Go and learn the meaning of this word, I care for mercy not for sacrifice. For I have not come to call just men but sinners." Then the disciples of John came up to him and said, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast a great deal, and your disciples do not fast?"

As Jesus passed along from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax-office; he said to him, "Follow me"; and he rose and followed him.

Then he went out again by the seaside, and all the crowd came to him and he taught them. As he passed along he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax-office; he said to him, "Follow me," and he rose and followed him.

On going outside after this he noticed a taxgatherer called Levi sitting at the tax-office and said to him, "Follow me"; he rose, left everything and followed him.
