For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy; for I espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a pure virgin to Christ;

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the assembly, and delivered Himself up for it, that He might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of the water in the word, that He might present to Himself the assembly, glorious, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it may be holy and without blemish.

And this I say for your own profit; not that I may cast restraint upon you, but for that which is seemly, and compatible with constant devotion to the Lord without distraction.

Now, concerning the virgins, I have no commandment of the Lord; but I give my judgment, as having received mercy from the Lord to be faithful. I think, therefore, that this is good on account of the impending distress; namely, that it is good for a man to be thus. Have you become bound to a wife? Seek not a release. "And afterward come also the remaining virgins, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' But he, answering, said, 'Verily I say to you, I know you not.' Watch, therefore, because ye know not the day, nor the hour!
