Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men,
How long will you stay in bed, you slacker?
When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the arms to rest, and your poverty will come like a robber,
your need, like a bandit.
There is an occasion for everything,
and a time for every activity under heaven:
Go to the ant, you slacker!
Observe its ways and become wise. Without leader, administrator, or ruler, it prepares its provisions in summer;
it gathers its food during harvest.
Teach us to number our days carefully
so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.
Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.
The thief must no longer steal. Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need.
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the pagans choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.
You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.
