'Chaff' in the Bible
Do you wish to torment a windblown leaf and chase after dry chaff?
How often are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff swept away by a whirlwind?
Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones become like chaff to it.
Not so with the wicked! Instead they are like wind-driven chaff.
May they be like wind-driven chaff, as the Lord's angel attacks them!
But the horde of invaders will be like fine dust, the horde of tyrants like chaff that is blown away. It will happen suddenly, in a flash.
His battle cry overwhelms like a flooding river that reaches one's neck. He shakes the nations in a sieve that isolates the chaff; he puts a bit into the mouth of the nations and leads them to destruction.
You conceive straw, you give birth to chaff; your breath is a fire that destroys you.
"At that time the people of Judah and Jerusalem will be told, 'A scorching wind will sweep down from the hilltops in the desert on my dear people. It will not be a gentle breeze for winnowing the grain and blowing away the chaff.
"The Lord says, 'That is why I will scatter your people like chaff that is blown away by a desert wind.
I will send people to winnow Babylonia like a wind blowing away chaff. They will winnow her and strip her land bare. This will happen when they come against her from every direction, when it is time to destroy her.
Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were broken in pieces without distinction and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors that the wind carries away. Not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the statue became a large mountain that filled the entire earth.
Therefore they will disappear like the morning mist, like early morning dew that evaporates, like chaff that is blown away from a threshing floor, like smoke that disappears through an open window.
We're eager to trade silver for the poor, a pair of sandals for the needy! We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!"
before God's decree becomes reality and the day of opportunity disappears like windblown chaff, before the Lord's raging anger overtakes you -- before the day of the Lord's angry judgment overtakes you!
"For indeed the day is coming, burning like a furnace, and all the arrogant evildoers will be chaff. The coming day will burn them up," says the Lord who rules over all. "It will not leave even a root or branch.
