'Dead' in the Bible
The wicked [those who live in disobedience to God’s law] are not so,But they are like the chaff [worthless and without substance] which the wind blows away.
For no faith may be put in their words; their inner part is nothing but evil; their throat is like an open place for the dead; smooth are the words of their tongues.
In death, there is no memory of you. Who will give you thanks where the dead are?
The wicked will turn back to where the dead are all the nations that have forgotten God.
For You will not abandon me to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead),Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
The cords of Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) surrounded me;The snares of death confronted me.
O Lord, You have brought my life up from Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead);You have kept me alive, so that I would not go down to the pit (grave).
I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
Let me not be put to shame, O Lord, for I call on You;Let the wicked (godless) be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead).
My behaviour was as if it had been my friend or my brother: I was bent low in grief like one whose mother is dead.
My haters say evil against me, When will he be dead, and his name come to an end?
The place of the dead is their house for ever, and their resting-place through all generations; those who come after them give their names to their lands.
Like sheep, they are destined for the realm of the dead, with death as their shepherd. The upright will have dominion over them in the morning; their strength will be consumed in the afterlife, so that they have no home.
But God will redeem my life from the power of Sheol,For He will receive me. Selah.
Let death come deceitfully upon them;Let them go down alive to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead),For evil [of every kind] is in their dwelling and in their hearts, in their midst.
Do not strike them dead suddenly, because then my people might forget the lesson. Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down, O Lord who shields us!
But those who seek my life to destroy itWill [be destroyed and] go into the depths of the earth [into the underworld].
At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind!
O Lord, God of my salvation, I have been crying to you for help by day and by night:
For my soul is full of troubles,And my life draws near the grave (Sheol, the place of the dead).
Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.
Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead?
Will Your wonders be known in the darkness?And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness [where the dead forget and are forgotten]?
What man can live and not see death?Can he rescue his soul from the [powerful] hand of Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead)? Selah.
They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
Let no man have pity on him, or give help to his children when he is dead.
He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
The cords and sorrows of death encompassed me,And the terrors of Sheol came upon me;I found distress and sorrow.
If I rise to heaven, there you are! If I lay down with the dead, there you are!
Just as one plows and breaks up the earth, our bones are scattered near the entrance to the place of the dead.
