'Joy' in the Bible
You have enlarged the nationand increased its joy.The people have rejoiced before Youas they rejoice at harvest timeand as they rejoice when dividing spoils.
Joy and rejoicing have been removed from the orchard;no one is singing or shouting for joy in the vineyards.No one tramples grapes in the winepresses.I have put an end to the shouting.
But look: joy and gladness,butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep,eating of meat, and drinking of wine—“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
In the streets they cry for wine.All joy grows dark;earth’s rejoicing goes into exile.
The humble will have joyafter joy in the Lord,and the poor people will rejoicein the Holy One of Israel.
For the palace will be forsaken,the busy city abandoned.The hill and the watchtower will becomebarren places forever,the joy of wild donkeys,and a pasture for flocks,
It will blossom abundantlyand will also rejoice with joy and singing.The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.They will see the glory of the Lord,the splendor of our God.
Then the lame will leap like a deer,and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy,for water will gush in the wilderness,and streams in the desert;
and the redeemed of the Lord will returnand come to Zion with singing,crowned with unending joy.Joy and gladness will overtake them,and sorrow and sighing will flee.
Let the desert and its cities shout,the settlements where Kedar dwells cry aloud.Let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy;let them cry out from the mountaintops.
Leave Babylon,flee from the Chaldeans!Declare with a shout of joy,proclaim this,let it go out to the end of the earth;announce,“The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob!”
Shout for joy, you heavens!Earth, rejoice!Mountains break into joyful shouts!For the Lord has comforted His people,and will have compassion on His afflicted ones.
For the Lord will comfort Zion;He will comfort all her waste places,and He will make her wilderness like Eden,and her desert like the garden of the Lord.Joy and gladness will be found in her,thanksgiving and melodious song.
And the redeemed of the Lord will returnand come to Zion with singing,crowned with unending joy.Joy and gladness will overtake them,and sorrow and sighing will flee.
The voices of your watchmen—they lift up their voices,shouting for joy together;for every eye will seewhen the Lord returns to Zion.
You will indeed go out with joyand be peacefully guided;the mountains and the hills will break into singing before you,and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Instead of your being deserted and hated,with no one passing through,I will make you an object of eternal pride,a joy from age to age.
Because your shame was double,and they cried out, “Disgrace is their portion,”therefore, they will possess double in their land,and eternal joy will be theirs.
My servants will shout for joy from a glad heart,but you will cry out from an anguished heart,and you will lament out of a broken spirit.
Then be glad and rejoice foreverin what I am creating;for I will create Jerusalem to be a joyand its people to be a delight.
You who tremble at His word,hear the word of the Lord:“Your brothers who hate and exclude youbecause of Me have said,‘Let the Lord be glorifiedso that we can see your joy!’But they will be put to shame.”
