For we have many members in one body and all members do not have the same function. These many members are one body in Christ, and every one, individually, is a member one of the other. Do you not know that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and unite them with (turn them into) the members of a prostitute? God forbid! What? Do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute is one (united with her) body? For he said: Two will be one flesh. He who is joined to the Lord is one (united with him in) spirit.

The cup of blessing we bless, is it not the sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread we break, is it not the sharing of the body of Christ? For we being many are one-bread and one-body. We are all partakers of that one bread.

For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of that one body, being many and are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we are Jews or people of the nations, whether we are bond or free; we were all made to drink of one Spirit. If the foot should say: Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the ear should say: Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where is the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where is the smelling? Has God set the members of the body, every one of them, just as it pleased him? And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now they are many members, yet they are one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Those members of the body, which seem to be weaker, are necessary. And those members of the body that we think to be less honorable, we offer these more honors. Our less acceptable parts have more abundant acceptability. For our acceptable parts have no need. But God has assembled the body together, having given more abundant honor to the part that was lacking. There should be no division in the body. So the members should have the same care for each other. When one member suffers all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. and what the exceeding greatness of his power is toward us who believe, according to the operation of his mighty strength. He (God) put all things in subjection under his feet, and made him head over all things to the congregation, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills (accomplishes) (completes) all in all.

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, invite you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called. Walk with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, putting up with one another in love. Diligently try to keep the unity (oneness) of the Spirit in the bond of peace. read more.
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling. There is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. There is one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all. But unto each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Therefore it says: When he ascended on high, he led captives, and gave gifts to men (anthropos: human beings). (Now this, He ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers. This is for the perfecting (equipping) (preparing) of the holy ones, for the work of ministering, for the building up of the body of Christ: until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown (mature) man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error. By speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in all things to him. For he, Christ, is the head. The entire body is properly framed and fitted together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in due measure of each individual part. It makes the body increase by building itself in love.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the congregation, he being the savior of the body. The congregation is subject to Christ. Likewise let the wives also be to their husbands in everything. read more.
Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the congregation and gave himself up for it. This is so he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word. So he will be able to present the congregation to himself as a glorious congregation, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing. It should be holy and without blemish. In this way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his own wife loves himself. No man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ also does the congregation. And we are members of his body! For this reason a man will leave his father and mother, and will stick (adhere) (cleave) (be joined) to his wife. The two will become one flesh. This secret is great! I speak with regard to Christ and of the congregation. Each one of you should love his own wife even as himself. The wife should respect her husband.

Like newborn infants, long for the spiritual milk that is without deception to help you grow to salvation. You have tasted that the Lord is kind.

Let the one who speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret what he says.

I would like it that you all speak with tongues, but I prefer that you prophesy. The person who announces (teaches) (preaches) God's Word is greater than the person who speaks with tongues. The person who speaks with tongues should have an interpreter so the congregation may receive understanding and knowledge.

How is it then, brothers? When you come together, every one of you has a psalm, has a doctrine, has a tongue, has a revelation, and has an interpretation. Let all things be done to clarify and offer understanding! If anyone speaks in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three. It should be orderly by plan and someone must interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let the speaker keep silence in the congregation and speak to himself and to God.




Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God. From Jerusalem, and round about Illyricum, I have fully preached the good news of Christ.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all with one accord in one place. Suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a rushing mighty wind. It filled the house where they were sitting. Tongues of fire that sat on each of them appeared. read more.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit moved them to speak. Devout Jews from every nation under heaven were dwelling at Jerusalem. When they heard this sound a crowd came together in confusion, because men heard them speak in their own language. And they were all amazed and marveled. They said to each other: Behold, are not all these that speak Galileans? How do we each hear them in our own language? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we hear them speak in our language the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed and were in doubt. They asked each other: What does this mean? Others mockingly said: These men are full of new wine. But Peter, stood up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said to them: You men of Judea, and all you who dwell at Jerusalem let me explain this to you. Listen to my words. These men are not drunk as you suppose for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. This is what the prophet Joel spoke about: It will come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out from my Spirit upon all flesh. (Greek: apo, from) Your sons and your daughters will prophesy (proclaim God's Word). Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out (a portion from) (some of) my Spirit in those days and they will prophesy: (Joel 2:28)

For the person who speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to men, but to God. No man understands him. He speaks secrets by the spirit. But the person who prophesies (proclaims God's Word openly) speaks to men to build up, encourage and comfort. The person who speaks in an unknown tongue enlightens himself; but he who declares God's Word enlightens the entire congregation! read more.
I would like it that you all speak with tongues, but I prefer that you prophesy. The person who announces (teaches) (preaches) God's Word is greater than the person who speaks with tongues. The person who speaks with tongues should have an interpreter so the congregation may receive understanding and knowledge. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? Inanimate objects that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? If the trumpet gives an unclear sound, who will prepare himself for the battle? The same for you unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will speak into the air. There are many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning. Therefore if I do not know the meaning of what someone is saying I will be a foreigner to him that speaks. And he that speaks will be a foreigner to me too. As much as you are zealous for spiritual gifts, strive to build-up (increase) the enlightenment (understanding) of the congregation. Let the one who speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret what he says. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding (mind) is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding (Greek: nous: mind) also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding (mind) also. When you bless with the spirit, how will the audience of the unlearned say Amen at your giving of thanks, seeing he does not understand what you said? For you give thanks well, but the other is not given understanding. I thank God that I speak with tongues more then all of you. Yet in the congregation I would rather speak five words with my understanding than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

It is written in the law: With men of other tongues and lips of foreigners I will speak to this people. Even then they will not listen to me, said Jehovah. Therefore speaking in tongues is a sign not for believers, but for those who do not believe. Prophesying (proclaiming God's Word) serves the believer and not the unbeliever. If therefore the whole congregation comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and the unlearned, or unbelievers, come there will they not say that you are out of your mind? read more.
But if all proclaim God's Word and an unbeliever comes there he is convinced by all. The secrets of his heart are made known. So falling down on his face he will worship God, and report, God is truly among you. How is it then, brothers?
