And Jesus replied, Are ye also still void of understanding?

And Jesus knowing their thoughts said to them, O ye of little faith, why do ye argue among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? Do ye not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves divided among five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

How is it then that ye do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, when I bid you to beware of the leaven of the pharisees and of the sadducees?

And He saith unto them, Are ye so void of understanding also? Do ye not know, that whatsoever from without entreth into a man cannot defile him?




And Jesus replied, Are ye also still void of understanding?

How is it then that ye do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, when I bid you to beware of the leaven of the pharisees and of the sadducees?



But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, so that they perceived it not, and they were afraid to ask Him concerning it.

But they understood none of these things; and this matter was hid from them, so that they knew not the things which were spoken.


Then came to Jesus the scribes and pharisees from Jerusalem saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat. But He answered and said unto them, And why do ye transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? read more.
For God commanded saying, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If any man say to his father or mother, "that which thou mightest be profited by from me is a gift to the temple," and so honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. And thus have ye made void the commandment of God by your tradition. Well did Esaias prophecy concerning you, saying, This people approach me with their mouth, and honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: but in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the injunctions of men. And He called the multitude to Him, and said unto them, Hear and understand it: not that which goeth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this polluteth the man. Whereupon his disciples came and said to Him, Dost thou know that the pharisees, when they heard this assertion, were offended at it? But He answered and said, Every plantation which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. Regard them not; for they are blind guides of the blind: and if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch. Then Peter answered, and said unto Him, Explain to us this parable. And Jesus replied, Are ye also still void of understanding? Do ye not yet know, that whatever goeth into the mouth passeth to the belly and is discharged downwards? But the things, which proceed out of the mouth, come from the heart, and those defile a man. For out of the heart proceed wicked disputings, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false-witnessings, slanders: these defile a man, but to eat without washing the hands doth not defile him.

and when they saw some of his disciples eating with impure (that is, unwashed) hands, they found fault: for the pharisees, and indeed all the Jews, do not eat till they have washed their hands thoroughly, observing the tradition of the ancients. And when they come from the market, they do not eat till they have washed. And there are many other things, which they have received to observe, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brass-vessels, and seats. read more.
Then the pharisees and the scribes ask Him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but eat without washing their hands? But He answered them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: and in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the injunctions of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye retain the tradition of men, as the washings of pots and cups, and many other such like things. And ye expressly annul the commandment of God, that ye may retain your own tradition; for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If a man tell his father or mother, That which thou mightest be profited by from me is Corban, (that is, a gift to the temple) it sufficeth: and so ye allow him to do nothing more for his father or his mother: making void the word of God by your tradition,. And many such like things ye do. And calling all the people to Him, He said unto them, Hear me all of you, and understand, There is nothing without a man, which entring into him can defile him: but the things proceeding from him are those which defile a man. If any one hath ears to hear, let him hear. And when He was come into the house, away from the multitude, his disciples asked Him concerning the meaning of the parable. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do, I allow not: for I do not that which I would; but what I hate, this I do. And if I do that which I would not, I consent to the law that it is good: read more.
but now I am no more the doer of it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) dwelleth no good: for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. For I do not the good that I would; but the evil which I would not, this I do. Now if I do that which I would not, I am no more the doer of it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a kind of law, that when I would do good, evil besets me. For I delight in the law of God, as to the inward man: but I perceive another law in my body warring against the law of my mind, and captivating me to the law of sin, which is in my body.

Whosoever therefore shall break one of the left of these commandments, and thereby teach men so to do, he shall be esteemed very little in the kingdom of heaven: but whoever shall do as well as teach them, he shall be accounted great in the kingdom of heaven.

The scribes and pharisees sit in the seat of Moses: observe therefore and do all things whatsoever they tell you to observe; but do not ye according to their works, for they say and do not: for they bind grievous and intolerable burthens, and impose them upon men; but they themselves will not put a finger to them: read more.
but they do all their works to be seen by men; they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the fringes of their garments, and love the uppermost places at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public assemblies, and to be called by men Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor even Christ, and ye are all brethren. Neither call any man upon earth Father; for one is your Father, who is in heaven: neither be ye called masters; for one is your master, even Christ. But let him that is greatest among you be your minister: and whosoever will exalt himself shall be abased, and whosoever will humble himself shall be exalted. But wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, nor suffer those that are entering to go in. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye devour widows houses, and for a cover make long prayers: therefore ye shall receive the heavier judgement. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and land to make a proselyte, and when he is gained, ye make him more the child of hell than yourselves. Wo unto you, ye blind guides, who say, If any one swear by the temple, it is nothing; but if any man swear by the gold of the temple, the oath is binding. Foolish and blind creatures! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, If any one swear by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swear by the gift upon it, he is bound. O foolish and blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifieth the gift? He then, that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all things upon it: and he, that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by Him that dwelleth in it: and he, that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by Him that sitteth upon it. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe even your mint, and anise, and cummin, but neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and fidelity: these ye ought undoubtedly to practise, and not to omit the others. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel! Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance: thou blind pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside of them may be also clean. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who are like whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful without, but within are full of the bones of the dead, and all manner of filthiness; so do ye likewise outwardly appear to men to be righteous, but within are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been concerned with them in shedding the blood of the prophets: so that ye are witnesses yourselves, that ye are the children of those who killed the prophets: fill up then the measure of your fathers, ye serpents, ye brood of vipers: how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

And when the pharisee saw it he wondered that He did not wash first, before dinner. But the Lord said unto him, ye pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of rapine and wickedness. Senseless creatures! Did not He who made the outside, make also that which is within? give alms rather according to your ability: read more.
and behold all things are clean to you. But wo unto you pharisees, who tithe even your mint, and rue, and all your herbs, and pass by judgement and the love of God: these ought ye to practise and not to omit the others. Wo unto you pharisees; for ye love the chief seat in synagogues, and salutations in public places. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye are like graves that do not appear, and those that walk over them are not aware of them. And one of the doctors of the law answered and said unto Him, Master, in saying these things thou reproachest us also. And He said, Wo unto you also, ye interpreters of the law, for ye load men with insupportable burthens, and ye yourselves touch not the burthens with one of your fingers. Wo unto you; who build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Thus ye testify that ye approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they put them to death, and ye build their sepulchres. And therefore the wisdom of God hath said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute: that the blood of all the prophets which has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. Wo unto you interpreters of the law; for ye have taken away the key of knowledge, ye entered not in yourselves, and those that were entering in, ye hindered.
