Acts 8:1-3

And Saul consented to his death. And at that time there was a great persecution of the church at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad through the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And pious men buried Stephen and made a great lamentation for him. But Saul persecuted the church, and going from house to house, seizing men and women, committed them to prison.

and the word of the Lord was spread through all the country. But the Jews excited the pious and honorable women, and the first men of the city, and raised a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and cast them out from their limits.
