He that is so impoverished that he has no oblation chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks unto himself a cunning workman to prepare a graven image that shall not be moved.

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the philosopher of this world? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For in the wisdom of God, since the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save those that believe.

which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship and humility and neglecting of the body, but they have absolutely no value against the appetites of the flesh.

For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

He that trusts in his riches shall fall, but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

Trust not in violence and become not vain in the taking of spoil; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

Why gloriest thou in the valleys? Thy valley has slipped, O backsliding daughter that trusted in her treasures, she that saith, Who shall come against me?
