'Righteousness' in the Bible

Then Abram believed in (affirmed, trusted in, relied on, remained steadfast to) the Lord; and He counted (credited) it to him as righteousness (doing right in regard to God and man).

‘You shall not do injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor nor show a preference for the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.

It will be [considered] righteousness for us [that is, right standing with God] if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the Lord our God—just as He has commanded us.

“Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them out before you, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord is dispossessing them before you.

It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out before you, and to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

“Know [without any doubt], that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked (stubborn, obstinate) people.

You shall certainly restore the pledge (security deposit) to him at sunset, so that he may sleep in his garment and bless you; and it will be credited to you as righteousness (right standing) before the Lord your God.

“They will call the peoples to the mountain (Mount Carmel);There they will offer sacrifices of righteousness;For they will draw out the abundance of the seas,And the hidden treasures of the sand.”

The Lord will repay each man for his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the Lord handed you over to me today, but I refused to put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed.

So David reigned over all Israel, and continued to administer justice and righteousness for all his people.

“Therefore the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,According to my cleanness in His sight.

Then Solomon said, “You have shown Your servant David my father great lovingkindness, because he walked before You in faithfulness and righteousness and with uprightness of heart toward You; and You have kept for him this great lovingkindness, in that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today.

then hear from heaven and act and judge Your servants, condemning the wicked by bringing his guilt on his own head, and justifying the righteous by rewarding him in accordance with his righteousness.

Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you to set you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord loved Israel forever, He made you king to execute justice and righteousness.”

then hear from heaven and act and judge Your servants, punishing the wicked by bringing his conduct on his own head, and providing justice to the righteous by giving to him in accordance with his righteousness (innocence).

Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you, setting you on His throne as king for the Lord your God; because your God loved Israel, establishing them forever, therefore He made you king over them, to do justice and righteousness.”

“Does God pervert justice?Or does the Almighty pervert righteousness?

“I put on righteousness, and it clothed me;My justice was like a robe and a turban!

“He will pray to God, and He shall be favorable to him,So that he looks at His face with joy;For God restores to man His righteousness [that is, his right standing with God—with its joys].

“Do you think this is according to [your] justice?Do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s’?

“Your wickedness affects only a man such as you,And your righteousness affects only a son of man [but it cannot affect God, who is sovereign].

“I will bring my knowledge from afar,And will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.

“The Almighty—we cannot find Him;He is exalted in powerAnd He will not do violence to [nor disregard] justice and abundant righteousness.

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!You have freed me when I was hemmed in and relieved me when I was in distress;Be gracious to me and hear [and respond to] my prayer.

O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness because of my enemies;Make Your way straight (direct, right) before me.

The Lord judges the peoples;Judge me, O Lord, and grant me justice according to my righteousness and according to the integrity within me.

And He will judge the world in righteousness;He will execute judgment for the nations with fairness (equity).

As for me, I shall see Your face in righteousness;I will be [fully] satisfied when I awake [to find myself] seeing Your likeness.

The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness (moral character, spiritual integrity);According to the cleanness of my hands He has rewarded me.

Therefore the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness (moral character, spiritual integrity),According to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.

They will come and declare His righteousnessTo a people yet to be born—that He has done it [and that it is finished].

He refreshes and restores my soul (life);He leads me in the paths of righteousnessfor His name’s sake.

He shall receive a blessing from the Lord,And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

In You, O Lord, I have placed my trust and taken refuge;Let me never be ashamed;In Your righteousness rescue me.

He loves righteousness and justice;The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.

Judge me, O Lord my God, according to Your righteousness and justice;And do not let them rejoice over me.

And my tongue shall declare Your righteousness (justice),And Your praise all the day long.

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God,Your judgments are like the great deep.O Lord, You preserve man and beast.

O continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,And Your righteousness (salvation) to the upright in heart.

I have proclaimed good news of righteousness [and the joy that comes from obedience to You] in the great assembly;Behold, I will not restrain my lips [from proclaiming Your righteousness],As You know, O Lord.

I have not concealed Your righteousness within my heart;I have proclaimed Your faithfulness and Your salvation.I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.

And in Your majesty ride on triumphantlyFor the cause of truth and humility and righteousness;Let Your right hand guide You to awesome things.

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

You have loved righteousness (virtue, morality, justice) and hated wickedness;Therefore God, your God, has anointed YouAbove Your companions with the oil of jubilation.

As is Your name, O God,So is Your praise to the ends of the earth;Your right hand is full of righteousness (rightness, justice).

And the heavens declare His righteousness,For God Himself is judge. Selah.

Rescue me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;Then my tongue will sing joyfully of Your righteousness and Your justice.

Then will You delight in the sacrifices of righteousness,In burnt offering and whole burnt offering;Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

You love evil more than good,And falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah.

Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods (heavenly beings)?Do you judge fairly, O sons of men?

By awesome and wondrous things You answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation,You who are the trust and hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea;

Add [unforgiven] iniquity to their iniquity [in Your book],And may they not come into Your righteousness.

In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;Incline Your ear to me and save me.

I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord God [and in His strength];I will make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.

Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the [height of the] heavens,You who have done great things;O God, who is like You, [who is Your equal]?

My tongue also will speak of Your righteousness all day long;For they are ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek my injury.

Give the king [knowledge of] Your judgments, O God,And [the spirit of] Your righteousness to the king’s son [to guide all his ways].

May he judge Your people with righteousness,And Your afflicted with justice.

The mountains will bring peace and prosperity to the people,And the hills, in [the establishment of] righteousness.

Steadfast love and truth and faithfulness meet together;Righteousness and peace kiss each other.

Truth springs from the earth,And righteousness looks down from heaven.

Righteousness will go before HimAnd will make His footsteps into a way [in which to walk].

Will Your wonders be known in the darkness?And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness [where the dead forget and are forgotten]?

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;Lovingkindness and truth go before You.

In Your name they rejoice all the day,And in Your righteousness they are exalted.

Before the Lord, for He is coming,For He is coming to judge the earth.He will judge the world with righteousnessAnd the peoples in His faithfulness.

Clouds and thick darkness surround Him [as at Sinai];Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.

The heavens declare His righteousness,And all the peoples see His glory and brilliance.

The Lord has made known His salvation;He has [openly] revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations.

Before the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth;He will judge the world with righteousnessAnd the peoples with fairness.

The strength of the King loves justice and righteous judgment;You have established fairness;You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob (Israel).

The Lord executes righteousnessAnd justice for all the oppressed.

He made known His ways [of righteousness and justice] to Moses,His acts to the children of Israel.

But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who [reverently] fear Him,And His righteousness to children’s children,

Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake,That He might make His [supreme] power known.

And that was credited to him for righteousness,To all generations forever.

Splendid and majestic is His work,And His righteousness endures forever.

Wealth and riches are in his house,And his righteousness endures forever.

He has given freely to the poor;His righteousness endures forever;His horn will be exalted in honor.

Open to me the [temple] gates of righteousness;I shall enter through them, I shall give thanks to the Lord.

I long for Your precepts;Renew me through Your righteousness.

Ayin.I have done justice and righteousness;Do not leave me to those who oppress me.

You have commanded Your testimonies in righteousnessAnd in great faithfulness.

Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,And Your law is truth.

Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness (right living),And let Your godly ones shout for joy.

For the Lord will judge His peopleAnd He will have compassion on His servants [revealing His mercy].

Hear my prayer, O Lord,Listen to my supplications!Answer me in Your faithfulness, and in Your righteousness.

Save my life, O Lord, for Your name’s sake;In Your righteousness bring my life out of trouble.

To receive instruction in wise behavior and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness,Righteousness, justice, and integrity;

Then you will understand righteousness and justice [in every circumstance]And integrity and every good path.

“Riches and honor are with me,Enduring wealth and righteousness (right standing with God).

“I, [Wisdom, continuously] walk in the way of righteousness,In the midst of the paths of justice,

Treasures of wickedness and ill-gotten gains do not profit,But righteousness and moral integrity in daily life rescues from death.

Riches will not provide security in the day of wrath and judgment,But righteousness rescues from death.

The righteousness of the blameless will smooth their way and keep it straight,But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.

The righteousness of the upright will rescue them,But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed.

A gracious and good woman attains honor,And ruthless men attain riches [but not respect].

The wicked man earns deceptive wages,But he who sows righteousness and lives his life with integrity will have a true reward [that is both permanent and satisfying].

He who is steadfast in righteousness attains life,But he who pursues evil attains his own death.

He who speaks truth [when he testifies] tells what is right,But a false witness utters deceit [in court].
