The Time For Behaving Like The Gentiles Is Past

1 Well, as Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, let this very conviction that he who has suffered in the flesh gets quit of sin,

1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

1 Therefore, since (A)Christ has (a)suffered in the flesh, (B)arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because (C)he who has (b)suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,

1 Therefore, since Christ suffered(a) in the flesh,(b) equip(c) yourselves also with the same resolve(d)—because the one who suffered in the flesh has finished(A) with sin(e)

1 Therefore, since the Messiah suffered in a mortal body, you, too, must arm yourselves with the same determination, because the person who has suffered in a mortal body has stopped sinning,

2 nerve you to spend the rest of your time in the flesh for the will of God and no longer for human passions.

2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

2 (D)so as to live (E)the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the (F)will of God.

2 in order to live the remaining time in the flesh, no longer for human desires,(f) but for God’s will.(B)

2 so that he can live the rest of his mortal life guided, not by human desires, but by the will of God.

3 It is quite enough to have done as pagans choose to do, during the time gone by! You used to lead lives of sensuality, lust, carousing, revelry, dissipation and illicit idolatry,

3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

3 For (G)the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, (c)(H)having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and (d)abominable idolatries.

3 For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the pagans choose to do:(g) carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires,(C) drunkenness, orgies,(D) carousing, and lawless idolatry.

3 For you spent enough time in the past doing what the gentiles like to do, living in sensuality, sinful desires, drunkenness, wild celebrations, drinking parties, and detestable idolatry.

4 and it astonishes them that you will not plunge with them still into the same flood of profligacy. They abuse you,

4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

4 In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of (I)dissipation, and they (J)malign you;

4 So they are surprised that you don’t plunge with them into the same flood(h) of wild living—and they slander you.

4 They insult you now because they are surprised that you are no longer joining them in the same excesses of wild living.

5 but they will have to answer for that to Him who is prepared to judge the living and the dead

5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

5 but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge (K)the living and the dead.

5 They will give an account to the One who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.(E)

5 They will give an account to the one who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

6 (for this was why the gospel was preached to the dead as well, that while they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live as God lives in the spirit).

6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

6 For (L)the gospel has for this purpose been (e)preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.

6 For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead,(F) so that, although they might be judged by men in the fleshly(G) realm,(i) they might live(H) by God in the spiritual realm.(j)

6 Indeed, this is why the gospel was proclaimed even to those who have died, so that they could be judged in their mortal flesh like all humans and live in the spiritual realm like God.

Serving To The Glory Of God

7 Now the end of all is near. Steady then, keep cool and pray!

7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

7 (M)The end of all things (f)is near; therefore, (N)be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of (g)prayer.

7 Now the end of all things is near;(I) therefore, be serious and disciplined(J) for prayer.

7 Because everything will soon come to an end, be sensible and clear-headed, so you can pray.

8 Above all, be keen to love one another, for love hides a host of sins.

8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

8 Above all, (O)keep fervent in your love for one another, because (P)love covers a multitude of sins.

8 Above all, maintain an intense love(K) for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins.(L)(k)

8 Above all, continue to love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.

9 Be hospitable to each other, and do not grudge it.

9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

9 (Q)Be hospitable to one another without (R)complaint.

9 Be hospitable(M) to one another without complaining.

9 Show hospitality to one another without complaining.

10 You must serve one another, each with the talent he has received, as efficient stewards of God's varied grace.

10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

10 (S)As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good (T)stewards of the manifold grace of God.

10 Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others,(N) as good managers of the varied grace of God.

10 As good servant managers of God's grace in its various forms, serve one another with the gift each of you has received.

11 If anyone preaches, he must preach as one who utters the words of God; if anyone renders some service, it must be as one who is supplied by God with power, so that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. The glory and the dominion are his for ever and ever: Amen.

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

11 (U)Whoever speaks, is to do so (h)as one who is speaking the (V)utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving (i)(W)by the strength which God supplies; so that (X)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, (Y)to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

11 If anyone speaks, it should be as one who speaks God’s words; if anyone serves, it should be from the strength God provides,(O) so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

11 Whoever speaks must speak God's words. Whoever serves must serve with the strength that God supplies, so that in every way God may be glorified through Jesus, the Messiah. Glory and power belong to him forever and ever! Amen.

Sharing The Sufferings Of Christ

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the ordeal that has come to test you, as though some foreign experience befell you.

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

12 (Z)Beloved, do not be surprised at the (AA)fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;

12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal(l) comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you.(P)

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised by the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

13 You are sharing what Christ suffered; so rejoice in it, that you may also rejoice and exult when his glory is revealed.

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

13 but to the degree that you (AB)share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the (AC)revelation of His glory (AD)you may rejoice with exultation.

13 Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of the Messiah,(Q) so that you may also rejoice with great joy at the revelation(R) of His glory.

13 Instead, because you are participating in the sufferings of the Messiah, keep on rejoicing, so that you may be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.

14 If you are denounced for the sake of Christ, you are blessed; for then the Spirit of glory and power, the Spirit of God himself, is resting on you.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

14 If you are reviled (j)(AE)for the name of Christ, (AF)you are blessed, (AG)because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

14 If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ,(S) you are blessed, because the Spirit(T) of glory and of God rests on you.(m)

14 If you are insulted because of the name of the Messiah, you are blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God is resting on you.

15 None of you must suffer as a murderer or a thief or a bad character or a revolutionary;

15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

15 Make sure that (AH)none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a (k)(AI)troublesome meddler;

15 None of you, however, should suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.(n)

15 Of course, none of you should suffer for being a murderer, thief, criminal, or troublemaker.

16 but if a man suffers for being a Christian, he must not be ashamed, he must rather glorify God for that.

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

16 but if anyone suffers as a (AJ)Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to (AK)glorify God in this name.

16 But if anyone suffers as a “Christian,” he should not be ashamed but should glorify God in having that name.

16 But if you suffer for being a Christian, do not feel ashamed, but glorify God with that name.

17 It is time for the Judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the fate of those who refuse obedience to God's gospel?

17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

17 For it is time for judgment (AL)to begin (l)with (AM)the household of God; and if it (AN)begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those (AO)who do not obey the (AP)gospel of God?

17 For the time has come for judgment(U) to begin with God’s household,(V) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?

17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. And if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who refuse to obey the gospel of God?

18 If the just man is scarcely saved, what will become of the impious and sinful?

18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

18 (AQ)And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, (m)what will become of the (AR)godless man and the sinner?

18 And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty,what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?(W)(o)

18 "If it is hard for the righteous person to be saved, what will happen to the ungodly and sinful person?"

19 So let those who are suffering by the will of God trust their souls to him, their faithful Creator, as they continue to do right.

19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to (AS)the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

19 So those who suffer according to God’s will should, while doing what is good, entrust themselves(X) to a faithful Creator.

19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do what is good.
