Timothy Accompanies Paul And Silas

1 He went to Derbe and Lystra also. At Lystra there was a disciple named Timothy whose mother was a Jewish Christian while his father was a Greek,

1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:

1 Paul came also to (A)Derbe and to (B)Lystra. And a disciple was there, named (C)Timothy, the son of a (D)Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek,

1 Then he went on to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy,(A) the son of a believing Jewish woman,(B) but his father was a Greek.

1 Paul also went to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish wife whose husband was a Greek.

2 and who was highly thought of by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium.

2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

2 and he was well spoken of by (E)the brethren who were in (F)Lystra and (G)Iconium.

2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him.(C)

2 Timothy was highly regarded by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium.

3 Paul wished to take this man on with him, and so on account of the Jews in that district he had him circumcised, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

3 Paul wanted this man to (a)go with him; and he (H)took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

3 Paul wanted Timothy(a) to go with him, so he took him and circumcised(D) him because of the Jews who were in those places, since they all knew that his father was a Greek.

3 Paul wanted this man to go with him, so he took him and had him circumcised because of the Jews who lived in that region, since everyone knew that Timothy's father was a Greek.

4 As they traveled on from one town to another, they passed on to the brothers for their observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem.

4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.

4 Now while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering (I)the decrees which had been decided upon by (J)the apostles and (K)elders who were in Jerusalem, for them to observe.

4 As they traveled through the towns, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem for them to observe.(E)

4 As they went from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for them to obey.

5 So the churches became stronger and stronger in the faith, and their numbers increased from day to day.

5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

5 So (L)the churches were being strengthened (b)in the faith, and were (M)increasing in number daily.

5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in number daily.(F)

5 So the churches continued to be strengthened in the faith and to increase in numbers every day.

Paul's Vision Of A Man Of Macedonia

6 Thus they crossed Phrygia and Galatia. The holy Spirit prevented them from delivering the message in Asia,

6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

6 They passed through the (c)(N)Phrygian and (O)Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in (d)(P)Asia;

6 They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia and were prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in Asia.(G)

6 Because they had been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the word in Asia, Paul and Timothy went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia.

7 and when they reached Mysia they tried to get into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit it,

7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

7 and after they came to (Q)Mysia, they were trying to go into (R)Bithynia, and the (S)Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;

7 When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus(H) did not allow them.

7 They went as far as Mysia and tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them,

8 and they passed Mysia and came down to Troas.

8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

8 and passing by (T)Mysia, they came down to (U)Troas.

8 So, bypassing Mysia, they came down to Troas.(I)

8 so they bypassed Mysia and went down to Troas.

9 There Paul had a vision one night; a Macedonian was standing appealing to him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."

9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

9 (V)A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of (W)Macedonia was standing and appealing to him, and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

9 During the night a vision appeared to Paul: A Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!”(J)

9 During the night Paul had a vision. A man from Macedonia was standing there and pleading with him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!"

10 As soon as he had this vision, we made efforts to get on to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to tell them the good news.

10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

10 When he had seen (X)the vision, immediately (Y)we sought to (e)go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to (Z)preach the gospel to them.

10 After(K) he had seen the vision, we(b) immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to evangelize them.

10 As soon as he had seen the vision, we immediately looked for a way to go to Macedonia, because we were convinced that God had called us to tell the people there the good news.

The Conversion Of Lydia At Philippi

11 So we sailed from Troas, and ran a straight course to Samothrace, and next day to Neapolis.

11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

11 So putting out to sea from (AA)Troas, we ran (AB)a straight course to Samothrace, and on the day following to Neapolis;

11 Then, setting sail from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis,

11 Sailing from Troas, we went straight to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis,

12 From there we went to Philippi, a Roman garrison town, and the principal place in that part of Macedonia. In this town we stayed for some days.

12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

12 and from there to (AC)Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of (AD)Macedonia, (AE)a Roman colony; and we were staying in this city for some days.

12 and from there to Philippi,(L) a Roman colony, which is a leading city of that district of Macedonia. We stayed in that city for a number of days.

12 and from there to Philippi, an important city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We were in this city for several days.

13 On the Sabbath we went outside the gates, to the bank of the river where we supposed there was a praying place, and we sat down and talked with the women who gathered there.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

13 And on (AF)the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and began speaking to the women who had assembled.

13 On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate by the river, where we thought there was a place of prayer. We sat down and spoke to the women gathered there.

13 On the Sabbath day, we went out the city gate and walked along the river, where we thought there was a place of prayer. We sat down and began talking to the women who had gathered there.

14 One of our hearers was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple goods, from the town of Thyatira. She was a believer in God, and the Lord touched her heart, and led her to accept Paul's teaching.

14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of (AG)Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, (AH)a worshiper of God, was listening; (f)and the Lord (AI)opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.

14 A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul.(M)

14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a dealer in purple goods, was listening to us. She was a worshiper of God, and the Lord opened her heart to listen carefully to what was being said by Paul.

15 When she and her household were baptized, she appealed to us, and said, "If you are really convinced that I am a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house." And she insisted upon our coming.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

15 And when she and (AJ)her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.

15 After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.”(N) And she persuaded us.

15 When she and her family were baptized, she urged us, "If you are convinced that I am a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she continued to insist that we do so.

Paul And Silas Imprisoned

16 Once as we were on our way to the praying place a slave-girl met us who had the gift of ventriloquism, and made her masters a great deal of money by her fortune-telling.

16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

16 It happened that as we were going to (AK)the place of prayer, a slave-girl having (AL)a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling.

16 Once, as we were on our way to prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit of prediction.(c)(O) She made a large profit for her owners by fortune-telling.

16 Once, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of fortune-telling and who had brought her owners a great deal of money by predicting the future.

17 This girl would follow Paul and the rest of us, crying out, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, and they are making known to you a way of salvation."

17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

17 Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, “These men are bond-servants of (AM)the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you (g)the way of salvation.”

17 As she followed Paul and us she cried out, “These men, who are proclaiming to you(d) the way of salvation, are the slaves of the Most High God.”

17 She would follow Paul and us and shout, "These men are servants of the Most High God and are proclaiming to you a way of salvation!"

18 She did this for a number of days, until Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit in her, "In the name of Jesus Christ I order you to come out of her!" And it came out instantly.

18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

18 She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you (AN)in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very (h)moment.

18 And she did this for many days. But Paul was greatly aggravated and turning to the spirit, said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out right away.(e)(P)

18 She kept doing this for many days until Paul became annoyed, turned to her and told the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus the Messiah to come out of her!" And it came out that very moment.

19 But when her masters saw that their hopes of profits were gone, they seized Paul and Silas, dragged them to the public square, to the authorities,

19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

19 But when her masters saw that their hope of (AO)profit was (i)gone, they seized (AP)Paul and Silas and (AQ)dragged them into the market place before the authorities,

19 When her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas(Q) and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.

19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities who met together in the public square.

20 and brought them before the chief magistrates. "These men," they said, "are Jews, and they are making a great disturbance in our town.

20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

20 and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews,

20 Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jews

20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are stirring up a lot of trouble in our city. They are Jews

21 They are advocating practices which it is against the law for us as Romans to adopt or observe."

21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

21 and (AR)are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being (AS)Romans.”

21 and are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice.”(R)

21 and are advocating customs that we're not allowed to accept or practice as Romans."

22 The crowd also joined in the attack on them, and the magistrates had them stripped and beaten.

22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

22 The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their (j)robes off them and proceeded to order (k)them to be (AT)beaten with rods.

22 Then the mob joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.(S)

22 The crowd joined in the attack against them. Then the magistrates had Paul and Silas stripped of their clothes and ordered them beaten with rods.

23 After beating them severely, they put them in jail, and gave the jailer orders to keep close watch of them.

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

23 When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding (AU)the jailer to guard them securely;

23 After they had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to keep them securely guarded.

23 After giving them a severe beating, they threw them in jail and ordered the jailer to keep them under tight security.

24 He, having had such strict orders, put them into the inner cell, and fastened their feet in the stocks.

24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

24 (l)and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in (AV)the (m)stocks.

24 Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.(T)

24 Having received these orders, he put them into the inner cell and fastened their feet in leg irons.

The Conversion Of The Philippian Jailer

25 But about midnight, as Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

25 But about midnight (AW)Paul and Silas were praying and (AX)singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

25 Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

26 suddenly there was such an earthquake that the jail shook to its foundations; all the doors flew open, and everybody's chains were unfastened.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

26 and suddenly (AY)there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately (AZ)all the doors were opened and everyone’s (BA)chains were unfastened.

26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains came loose.(U)

26 Suddenly, there was an earthquake so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken. All the doors immediately flew open, and everyone's chains were unfastened.

27 It woke up the jailer, and when he saw that the doors of the jail were open, he drew his sword and was just going to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

27 When (BB)the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about (BC)to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

27 When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped.

27 When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped.

28 But Paul shouted out, "Do not do yourself any harm! We are all here!"

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

28 But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!”

28 But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Don’t harm yourself, because all of us are here!”

28 But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Don't hurt yourself, because we are all here!"

29 Then he called for lights and rushed in, and fell trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas.

29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

29 And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before (BD)Paul and Silas,

29 Then the jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.

29 The jailer asked for torches and rushed inside. Trembling as he knelt in front of Paul and Silas,

30 He led them out of the jail and said to them, "Gentlemen, what must I do to be saved?"

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

30 and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, (BE)what must I do to be saved?”

30 Then he escorted them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”(V)

30 he took them outside and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

31 "Believe in the Lord Jesus," they said, "and you and your household will be saved!"

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

31 They said, “(BF)Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and (BG)your household.”

31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”(W)

31 They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved."

32 Then they told God's message to him and to all the members of his household.

32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

32 And they spoke the word of (n)the Lord to him together with all who were in his house.

32 Then they spoke the message of the Lord to him along with everyone in his house.

32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and everyone in his home.

33 And right then in the night, he took them and washed their wounds, and he and all his household were baptized immediately.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

33 And he took them (BH)that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.

33 He took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds. Right away he and all his family were baptized.

33 At that hour of the night, he took them and washed their wounds. Then he and his entire family were baptized immediately.

34 Then he took them up to his house and offered them food, and he and all his household were very happy over their new faith in God.

34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

34 And he brought them into his house and set (o)food before them, and rejoiced (p)greatly, having believed in God with (BI)his whole household.

34 He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had believed God with his entire household.(X)

34 He brought Paul and Silas upstairs into his house and set food before them. He was thrilled, as was his household, to believe in God.

Paul And Silas Receive An Official Apology

35 In the morning the magistrates sent policemen with instructions to let the men go.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.

35 Now when day came, the chief magistrates sent their policemen, saying, “Release those men.”

35 When daylight came, the chief magistrates sent the police to say, “Release those men!”

35 When day came, the magistrates sent guards, who commanded, "Release those men."

36 The jailer reported this message to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent orders that you are to be released. So you can take your leave and go unmolested."

36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

36 And (BJ)the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The chief magistrates have sent to release you. Therefore come out now and go (BK)in peace.”

36 The jailer reported these words to Paul: “The magistrates have sent orders for you to be released. So come out now and go in peace.”(Y)

36 The jailer reported these words to Paul, and added, "The magistrates have sent word to release you. So come out now and go in peace."

37 But Paul said to them, "They had us beaten in public without giving us a trial, and put us in jail, although we are Roman citizens! And now are they going to dismiss us secretly? By no means! Have them come here themselves and take us out!"

37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us in public without trial, (BL)men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they sending us away secretly? No indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out.”

37 But Paul said to them, “They beat us in public without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and threw us in jail. And now are they going to smuggle us out secretly? Certainly not! On the contrary, let them come themselves and escort us out!”(Z)

37 But Paul told the guards, "The magistrates have had us beaten publicly without a trial and have thrown us into jail, even though we are Roman citizens. Now are they going to throw us out secretly? Certainly not! Have them come and escort us out."

38 The policemen delivered this message to the magistrates, and they were alarmed when they heard that they were Roman citizens,

38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.

38 The policemen reported these words to the chief magistrates. (BM)They were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,

38 Then the police reported these words to the magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.

38 The guards reported these words to the magistrates, and they became afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.

39 and came and conciliated them, and took them out of the jail, and begged them to leave the town.

39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

39 and they came and appealed to them, and when they had brought them out, they kept begging them (BN)to leave the city.

39 So they came and apologized to them, and escorting them out, they urged them to leave town.

39 So the magistrates came, apologized to them, and escorted them out. Then they asked them to leave the city.

40 After leaving the jail they went to Lydia's house, and saw the brothers and encouraged them. Then they left the town.

40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

40 They went out of the prison and entered the house of (BO)Lydia, and when they saw (BP)the brethren, they (q)encouraged them and departed.

40 After leaving the jail, they came to Lydia’s house where they saw and encouraged the brothers, and departed.(AA)

40 Leaving the jail, Paul and Silas went to Lydia's house. They saw the brothers, encouraged them, and then left.
