God's Case Against Jacob's Heirs

1 Ephraim herds [the] wind and [is] pursuing [the] east wind all day long; he multiplies deception and violence and he {makes a treaty with Assyria}, and oil is brought to Egypt.

1 (a)Ephraim feeds on (A)wind,And pursues the (B)east wind continually;He multiplies lies and violence.Moreover, (b)he makes a covenant with Assyria,And oil is carried to Egypt.

1 Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

1 Ephraim chases(a) the wind(A)and pursues the east wind.(B)He continually multiplies lies and violence.He makes a covenant with Assyria,(C)and olive oil is carried to Egypt.(D)

1 "Ephraim feeds on the wind, chasing after the eastern winds, storing up lies and desolation day after day. They are making a contract with the Assyrians, and sending oil to Egypt.

Hosea's Wife And Children

2 Yahweh has a quarrel with Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.

2 The Lord also has a (C)dispute with Judah,And will punish Jacob (D)according to his ways;He will repay him according to his deeds.

2 The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.

2 The Lord also has a dispute with Judah.He is about to punish Jacob according to his ways;(E)He will repay him based on his actions.

2 The LORD accuses Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; he will repay him for what he does.

3 In the womb he deceived his brother, and in his manhood he struggled with God.

3 In the womb he (E)took his brother by the heel,And in his maturity he (F)contended with God.

3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:

3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel,(F)and as an adult he wrestled with God.(G)

3 He circumvented his brother in the womb, and as an adult he fought with God.

4 He struggled with [the] angel and prevailed; he pleaded for his mercy. He met him at Bethel, and there he spoke with him.

4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;He wept and (G)sought His favor.He found Him at (H)BethelAnd there He spoke with us,

4 Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us;

4 Jacob struggled with the Angel and prevailed;he wept and sought His favor.(H)He found him(b) at Bethel,(I)and there He spoke with him.(c)(J)

4 He even fought the angel and won; he cried and prayed to him. Then at Bethel he found him, and there he spoke with us

5 Yahweh the God of hosts, Yahweh [is] his renowned name!

5 Even the Lord, the God of hosts,The Lord is His (c)(I)name.

5 Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial.

5 Yahweh is the God of Hosts;Yahweh is His name.(K)

5 the LORD God of the Heavenly Armies the LORD is his name.

6 But you, you must return to your God; keep love and justice, and wait continually for your God.

6 Therefore, (J)return to your God,(K)Observe (d)kindness and justice,And (L)wait for your God continually.

6 Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.

6 But you must return to your God.(L)Maintain love and justice,(M)and always put your hope in God.(N)

6 So you, return to your God; guard grace and justice, and look to your God always.

Further Words Of Judgment

7 [The] trader, in his hand [are] scales of deceit; he loves to oppress.

7 A (e)merchant, in whose hands are false (M)balances,He loves to oppress.

7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.

7 A merchant loves to extort(O)with dishonest scales in his hands.(P)

7 "Now as for the merchant, deceitful balances remain in his hand, and he loves to defraud.

8 And Ephraim said, "Surely, I am rich, I gained wealth for myself; in all my toil they have not found guilt in me that is [sin].

8 And Ephraim said, “Surely I have become (N)rich,I have found wealth for myself;In all my labors they will find in me(O)No iniquity, which would be sin.”

8 And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.

8 But Ephraim says:“How rich I have become;(Q)I made it all myself.In all my earnings,no one can find any crime in me(R)that I can be punished for!”(d)

8 Ephraim claims, "I have become rich, I have made a fortune! Because of all my wealth, no one will find any iniquity or sin in me.'

Judgment On Apostate Israel

9 But I [am] Yahweh your God since the land of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, like the days of [the] appointed festival.

9 But I have been the Lord your God since the land of Egypt;I will make you (P)live in tents again,As in the days of the appointed festival.

9 And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.

9 I have been Yahweh your Godever since(e) the land of Egypt.(S)I will make you live in tents again,(T)as in the festival days.

9 "Yet I remain the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. I will make you live in tents again, as in the festival of that name.

10 I spoke to the prophets; I myself multiplied revelations and through the hand of the prophets I will destroy.

10 I have also spoken to the (Q)prophets,And I (f)gave numerous visions,And through the prophets I gave (R)parables.

10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

10 I spoke through the prophets(U)and granted many visions;I gave parables through the prophets.(V)

10 I spoke to the prophets, giving revelation after revelation, and employing parables in the prophetic writings.

11 If [in] Gilead [there is] evil, surely they will come to nothing. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls, also their altars will be like stone heaps on furrows of [the] field.

11 Is there iniquity in Gilead?Surely they are worthless.In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,Yes, (S)their altars are like the stone heapsBeside the furrows of the field.

11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

11 Since Gilead is full of evil,(W)they will certainly come to nothing.They sacrifice bulls in Gilgal;(X)even their altars will be like heaps of rocks(Y)on the furrows of a field.

11 "There's iniquity in Gilead, isn't there? They have become truly vain. They sacrifice bulls in Gilgal; their altars are like piles of stone in furrowed fields.

Further Indictment Of Jacob's Heirs

12 Jacob fled [to] the open field of Aram, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he watched over [sheep].

12 Now (T)Jacob fled to the (g)land of Aram,And (U)Israel worked for a wife,And for a wife he kept sheep.

12 And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

12 Jacob fled to the land of Aram.(Z)Israel worked to earn a wife;(AA)he tended flocks for a wife.(AB)

12 Jacob fled into the land of Aram; Israel served there to obtain his wife, tending sheep to gain his wife.

13 And by a prophet Yahweh brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he was watched over.

13 But by a (V)prophet the Lord brought Israel from Egypt,And by a prophet he was kept.

13 And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

13 The Lord brought Israel from Egypt by a prophet,(AC)and Israel was tended by a prophet.

13 "By a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was rescued.

The Lord's Love For Unfaithful Israel

14 Ephraim has caused bitter provocation, and his Lord will {hold him responsible for his crimes} and pay back to him his insults.

14 (W)Ephraim has provoked to bitter anger;So his Lord will leave his (X)bloodguilt on himAnd bring back his (Y)reproach to him.

14 Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.

14 Ephraim has provoked bitter anger,(AD)so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him(AE)and repay him for his contempt.(AF) >

14 Ephraim has stirred up violent anger; therefore the guilt of his blood will remain on him, and his Lord will repay him for his contempt."
