Yahweh's Judgment On Idolatrous Israel
1 The abomination of Ephraim is come also into Israel. He is gone back to Baal, therefore must he die.
1 When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.
1 (A)When Ephraim (a)spoke, there was trembling.He (B)exalted himself in Israel,But through (C)Baal he (b)did wrong and died.
1 When Ephraim spoke,(A) there was trembling;he was exalted in Israel.(B)But he incurred guilt through Baal(C) and died.
1 "When the tribe of Ephraim spoke, there was trembling; and it was exalted within Israel. But when they offended God by Baal, they died,
2 And now they sin more and more. Of their silver, they make them molten Images, like the idols of the Heathen, and yet all is nothing but the work of the craftsmen. Notwithstanding they preach of the same: whoso will kiss the calves, offereth to men.
2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
2 And now they sin more and more,And make for themselves (D)molten images,Idols (c)(E)skillfully made from their silver,All of them the (F)work of craftsmen. They say of them, “Let the (d)men who sacrifice kiss the (G)calves!”
2 Now they continue to sinand make themselves a cast image,(D)idols skillfully made from their silver,(E)all of them the work of craftsmen.(F)People say about them,“Let the men who sacrifice(a) kiss the calves.”(G)
2 but now they are sinning more and more, crafting idols from melted silver. Their idols are made with the most exacting skill, all of it the work of craftsmen. People say about them, "They offer human sacrifice, and kiss calf-shaped idols.'
3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the dew that early passeth away, and like as dust that the wind taketh away from the floor, and as smoke that goeth out of the chimney.
3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.
3 Therefore they will be like the (H)morning cloudAnd like dew which (e)soon disappears,Like (I)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floorAnd like (J)smoke from a (f)chimney.
3 Therefore, they will be like the morning mist,(H)like the early dew that vanishes, like chaff blown from a threshing floor,(I)or like smoke from a window.(J)
3 Therefore they will be like morning clouds, like early morning dew that evaporates, like chaff blown away from the threshing floor, or like smoke from a chimney."
Death And Resurrection
4 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: that thou shouldest know no God but me only, and that thou shouldest have no Saviour but only me.
4 Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
4 Yet I have been the (K)Lord your GodSince the land of Egypt; And you were not to know (L)any god except Me,For there is no savior (M)besides Me.
4 I have been Yahweh your God(K)ever since(b) the land of Egypt;you know no God but Me,(L)and no Savior exists besides Me.(M)
4 "I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt, and you have known no god except for me, because except for me there is no savior.
6 But when they were well fed and had enough, they waxed proud, and forgot me.
6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.
6 As they had their pasture, they became (P)satisfied,And being satisfied, their (Q)heart became proud; Therefore they (R)forgot Me.
6 When they had pasture, they became satisfied;(O)they were satisfied, and their hearts became proud.(P)Therefore they forgot Me.(Q)
6 As their pastures flourished, all their desires were met. As they were satiated, they became arrogant and therefore ignored me.
8 I will come upon them as a she bear, that is robbed of her whelps, and I will break that stubborn heart of theirs. There will I devour them as a lion: yea the wild beast shall tear them.
8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
8 I will encounter them (U)like a bear robbed of her cubs,And I will tear open (i)their chests;There I will also (V)devour them like a lioness,As a wild beast would tear them.
8 I will attack themlike a bear robbed of her cubsand tear open the rib cage over their hearts.I will devour them there like a lioness,(T)like a wild beast that would rip them open.
8 I will confront them like a bear deprived of her cubs; I will tear open their ribs. I will devour them like a lion the wild beasts will rip them apart.
10 Where are thy kings now, that shouldest help thee in all thy cities? Yea and thy judges, of whom thou sayest, "Give me a king and princes?"
10 I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
10 Where now is your (Y)kingThat he may save you in all your cities,And your (Z)judges of whom you (k)requested,“Give me a king and princes”?
10 Where now is your king,(e)(V)that he may save you in all your cities, and the(f) rulers(g)(W) you demanded, saying,“Give me a king and leaders”?
10 Now where is your king? Will he save you in all your cities? And where are your judges, about whom you demanded, "Give me a king and officials!'?
13 Therefore shall sorrows come upon him, as upon a woman that travaileth. An indiscreet son is he: for he considereth not, that he should not have been able to have endured in the time of his birth,
13 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
13 The pains of (AD)childbirth come upon him;He is (AE)not a wise son,For (l)it is not the time that he should (AF)delay at the opening of the womb.
13 Labor pains come on him.(AA)He is not a wise son;(AB)when the time comes,he will not be born.(h)(AC)
13 When the time of childbirth comes, he will be so foolish that he will refuse to be born."
14 had not I defended him from the grave, and delivered him from death. O death, I will be thy death: O hell, I will be thy sting.
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
14 Shall I (AG)ransom them from the (m)power of Sheol?Shall I redeem them from death?(AH)O Death, where are your thorns?O Sheol, where is your sting?(AI)Compassion will be hidden from My sight.
14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol.I will redeem(i) them from death.(AD)Death, where are your barbs?Sheol, where is your sting?(AE)Compassion is hidden from My eyes.(AF)
14 "From the power of Sheol I will rescue them, from death I will redeem them. Death, where are your plagues? Sheol, where is your destruction? My eyes will remain closed to your pleas for compassion.
The Coming Judgment
15 Yet can I see no comfort, for when he is now the goodliest among the brethren, the East wind, even the wind of the LORD, shall come down from the wilderness, and dry up his conduits, and drink up his wells: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
15 Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

15 Even though he is fruitful compared to his relatives, an east wind will come, the LORD's wind storm from the wilderness, and his spring will evaporate. His fountain will dry up, and the LORD's wind storm will plunder all the expensive vessels of the treasury.
16 As for Samaria, they shall be made waste. And why? They are disobedient unto their God. They shall perish with the sword, their children shall be slain, and their women great with child shall be ripped up.
16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
16 (o)Samaria will be held (AN)guilty,For she has (AO)rebelled against her God.(AP)They will fall by the (AQ)sword,Their little ones will be (AR)dashed in pieces,And their pregnant (AS)women will be ripped open.
